Pages THE HERALD Wednesday September 12 19 EDITORIAL PAGE A new era in Ontario A new era was ushered into Ontario politics last Thurs day with the election of the New Democratic Party under the stewardship of leader Bob In the previous 35 years of recorded electoral history in Ontario there had been virtually nary a whisper of a socialdemocratic party becoming a serious contender to form a majority government in the tnlhum province Stephen Lewis protestations notwithstanding Despite the victory it cannot be stated by any stretch of the imagination that Mr Raes political party captured the hearts and minds of the Ontario voters In fact despite the NDP majority the party captured only 6 per cent of the popular vote while the second place Liberal Party captured 32 per cent of the popular vote and the trailing Progressive Conservative Party won 23 5 per cent of the popular vote Not what any sensible person would consider an over whelming vote of confidence in our newly elected provin cial government If truth be told the NDP victory was more a protest vote against the other two established pohticial in On rather than a blanket endorsement of the NDPs A record number of voters turned out to cast their ballots in the 1990 provincial election and this speaks volumes in terms of the responsibility these voters felt towards the welfare of their province It is a Mr Rae and the elected MPP from North riding Noel should take seriously After having sprinkled a little bit of rain on the NDP vie tory parade lets also allow a little sunshine The NDP election victory in Ontario is a reality The doom and and similarly those peeking over the horizon expecting to see a horde of banner waving socialists descend on Ontario hell bent on pillage should be relegated to the back of the class Give the a chance The newlyelected government has five years not five minutes or five months to implement their policies and attempt to govern Ontario as best they see fit Defeated North Halton Libertarian Party candidate John seemed to sum up the feelings of Ontanans quite succinctly when he stated on election night evening The people wanted a change The people were pro testing against the Liberal Party and since they had already the Progressive Conservatives several years ago they felt they had to give the NDP a chance The Ontario gauntlet has been dropped Mr Its up to you to defend the provinces honor or from the field ignominy in light of your preelection promises the HERALD Home Newspaper of Halton Hills Established 1 866 A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company pride Chris Gougeon Georgetown Editor note The following let was released to the Hills Herald for publication Mr Keith Director of Planning The Corporation of the Town of Halton Hills RE Item No on the General Committee Meeting Agenda September 1990 Report No dated 1990 with respect to Niagara Escarpment Development Permit Application EAGLE RIDGE EQUITY INC Part Lots 9 and 10 Concession Town of Halton Hills File pear Mr Keith This letter will reiterate for the record the concerns that I presented to council at last nights meeting regarding the above noted development application Many of the residents in the area of the proposed development in eluding myself have had or now have very serious groundwater shortages Perhaps my own tion is as good as any to illustrate how careful you must be in making decisions on large water use development proposals such as this golf course Our acre lot on the north side of No Sideroad immediately adjacent to the development proposal has groundwater wells on it Three of the wells are 6 diameter drilled wells and are unproductive dry The fourth is a 36 diameter well bored to 75 feet in depth at great expense I feel that this well is a good one however my family follows very strict water tion practices so as not to put any unnecessary strain on the water I can provide you with many similar examples from the area and in due course will endeavour to document these cases but for the time being I am satisfied that council is now aware of the pro blem and has thankfully voted to defer your that the Niagara Escarpment sion be advised that the Council of the Town of Halton Hills recom mends that Application HC899049 in the name Eagle Ridge Equity BE APPROVED page Item Agenda General Committee Meeting Frankly Mr Keith I am dismayed that you and your staff would make such a recomrhenda tion prior to the implementation of groundwater studies by the propo nent in view of the fact that the golf course will be a big user of water Even more remarkable is that you make these recommends tions with the full knowledge that the groundwater supply in this area is critically low Mayor Miller stated at last nights meeting that the council has previously had to deal with the groundwater pro blem for this area Furthermore to my knowledge there has been no notification by the Town of Halton Hills or the Niagara Escarpment Commission to the local residents that this development application is even being considered let alone voted upon by council Some dismay about the timing of a vote on your recommendations and your ap parent lack of procedural protocol on this matter was also evident on the faces of some councillors This in through the back door ap proach to the planning process is completely unacceptable Is this meant to be a common sense pro cess or a puppet show Or should I simply ask who s pulling the strings here As a resident who could be great ly affected by this proposal I must insist on being made aware of any future developments andor in formation regarding this proposal I also feel that any groundwater study of the area would be complete without full documenta as to the current status of ex isting wells in the area This data would provide the terms of reference should a disruption of groundwater supply occur within a predetermined period following the start up of golf course opera tions
