The Castle is the city visual heart and everv thing else is lew ed its steal spacial or historical relation to it The Castle is still a working military site it is the head quarters of the Scottish Division and so has an armed guard at the main gate Don even think of walking around the Esplanade after closing time B the Gatehouse stand soldjers in Scot dress yes kilts and a more attractive outfit has been designed Everyone swears that nothing is worn under the kilt It was an awful wet da when we visited Such dedication to tradition The oldest build within the Castle walls is St Margaret s Chapel Built in the twelfth century by David 1 in to his sainted mother Margaret wife of King Malcolm III the Chapel is a small edifice that is still used the members of the Castle garrison for marriages There is a quaint tradition of for the chapel the place is looked after only by women named Margaret There are many things to look for in the Castle but the highlight is surely the Scottish Honours the Crown Jewels Sword Sceptre and Crown They are displayed m the room in the Palace where they were hidden for over a hundred years from 1707 to 1818 Sir Walter Scott who was instrumental in their rediscovery watched as the chest that contained them was opened for the first tune in ill years Until then rumors abounded that the English had taken them to London But they lay in the Castle walled up the whole time Also within the Palace part of the Castle is the small chamber where James VI and I first King of Scotland and England son of Mary Queen of Scots was born It is a wee room and in the Castle has to be the twentieth tur Scottish National War Memorial Opened in 1927 the Pnnce of Wales the building is simplv beautiful its centerpiece an exquisite wooden statue of St Michael hanging over the casket containing the names of the war dead It is a haunting place silent and grave imposing and painful Leaving the Castle one heads down the Mile a marvelous area measured from the Castle to Palace at the other end This is the Old Town a quarter ith medie architecture and outlook Cramped built upwards the Old Town is full of little alles called Closes where one imagines ghosts of the good and the evil Imgenng still never quite touched b the modern age There are manv stones of execu of of political turmoil throughout this historic area More on this aspect of Edin burgh in article four of this series A particularly interesting story is that of Mary King s Close which is now a subterranean street having been built over after falling into dereliction some centuries ago The reason it was abandoned Most of the residents died of the plague in 1645 and no one was will ing to move in afterwards Now it is accessible only through the City Chambers and must be viewed by special permission there are rumors that it is a haunted spot There are so things to see in the Old Town the Scotch Whisky Hentage Centre the Kirk Church of St Giles the Museum A guard dressed in the takes to do all One must not miss site is the statue to Bobby at Row Bobby was a loyal Skye Terrier whose master John Gray died in 1858 and was buried in Greyfnars graveyard Bobby followed him to the cemetery and never left He soon drew the attention of the city and a shelter was built for him and he was fed from local houses He staved near that churchyard for the next 14 years until his own death valley to the New Town is a large boulevard lin ed ith hotels and shops of all kinds The street is special by vir of its view a perfect vista of the Old Town and the Castle A law was passed in forbidding con on the south side of the street Thus one of the busiest streets in Scotland borders a valley with gardens and a nearly invisible railway The Scott Monument is the only thing to distract your eye from the Old Town and as monuments go it is a beauty it looks more like a church spire than anything The New Town is celebrated for its stunning Georgian ture Charlotte Square is especial ly notable for its buildings by Robert Adam famed Scottish ar Number 7 the Georgian House is open to visitors and is furnished to the period There is much more to Edin burgh than can be of here space simply does not permit more This is a wonderful city im pressive and delightful even to those who dislike cities The history old and older is enough to keep the visitor busy for weeks Restaurants pubs
