Wednesday August Georgetown should retain smalltown identity visitor says Georgetown should do everything it can to keep its small town identity a visiting university student says Peter has lived in Georgetown for the past three years but he was brought up in Europe Its such a quiet and peaceful place where everyone in the com munity knows each other a real family town Mr says The quietness really stands out As a third year political science student at the University of Waterloo Mr has been close enough to Georgetown visit his uncle and aunt and Susan Cooper Twiss Although Mr was born in Montreal he has lived most of his life England Belgium and Switzerland His parents currently reside in Switzerland Mr fears if Georgetown were to get any larger the towns communal atmosphere would disappear for good Although he appreciates the quietness in Georgetown he still finds it hard to believe that people choose to live an hour and a half away from where they work The housing in Georgetown is another thing Mr Twiss finds sur prising They houses are so much larger compared to those in Europe But he thinks its strange so many of the towns houses are built exactly the same You see ten houses in a row built the same he said He said in Europes small towns its not uncommon to see a castle and cobblestone streets Another big difference between Georgetown and some of its Euro pean counterparts is food There are so many fast food outlets Mr Twiss said It was one of the first things I noticed Only since the ear ly was established in Switzerland And it is only found in the cities he said But a permanent residence in Hills is unlikely in the near future because he yearns for the big city Hungry Steve DiPersio welcomed customers to the opening of Roys Texaco in Acton last may fail OTTAWA July 1989- bikes equipped with can tilever brakes are potentially hazardous the Product Safety Branch of Consumer and Cor porate Affairs Canada says Cantilever brakes are a new system of brakes found on most mountain bikes in which each of two cables one on either side of the tire activates a brake pad through an arm connected to the fork of the bike The two cables join into one main cable above the tire The rider activates the main cable through a brake lever located on the handlebars The danger occurs if the two cables operating the front brakes shake loose from the main cable and catch the knobby tires used on these bikes This could result in the bike stopping suddenly and its rider being hurled over the handlebars risking serious injury Racing bikes on the other hand are equipped with sidepull brakes Th hazard associated with can tilever brakes does not exist with these brakes A failure of the single vertical cable which activates the brake pad calipers will not jam the wheel Some Canadian bicycle manufacturers in consulation with Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada have agreed voluntarily to add a special restraining device to the front of mountain bike frames to prevent the brake cables jamming the wheels The device could include a reflector at its front end In the meantime mountain bike owners are advised to take their bikes to a bicycle shop where this device can be installed The cost is only a few dollars and will ensure safer riding for mountain bikers Weapon charge A 21yearold Georgetown man allegedly threatened another Georgetown male
