Acton squad confident July ist Page 19 Sabres ready to unsheath weapons By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor As it is in sports many times as it is in life The abyss has to be viewed before truly solid ground can be appreciated A parallel scenario can be penn ed for the Acton Tate Realty Sabres of the Junior League The abyss yawned threateningly last August but for tunately was sidestepped According to team president Robin Inscoe rock bottom was hit at that point with few if any pro spects for any kind of a future for the club The team was without a coach or manager the executive as such was virtually nonexistent only three players had offered any kind of indication they would be return ing and no ice time had been booked The Sabres struggled through regular season play finishing sixth in the seventeam loop then was rudely eliminated in four straight games by eventual Ontario cham pion Bradford Bulls Ah but what a difference a year makes At a team meeting this past winter real estate man Mitch jeuness stepped forward and of fered the club a solid foundation of stability something only dreamed Rams rollick over Hamilton Wildcats Acton Rams chalked up their third win in a row this past week convincingly downing Hamilton Wildcats 101 in a Golden Horseshoe Mens Lacrosse League contest played in Hamilton It was the Rams second win in a row over the Wildcats who seemed more content to play the role of spectator rather than participant The Hamilton squad picked up minutes in penalties to just eight minutes in penalties for the Rams Acton jumped out to a com fortable lead after 20 minutes led after two frames then coasted to the win Paul Wilson and Jim Clarke shared scoring laurels for the Rams each netted three goals George chipped in with a pair of markers while Returning coach Ken Steen an Erin resident in his early br ings a wealth of hockey experience to the Junior C squad Steen played minor hockey in Erin junior hockey in Brampton toiled for the Sheridan College Bruins tested the American col lege hockey waters with Kent State and- had a stint on defence with the nowdefunct Senior A Georgetown Raiders He earned his coaching stripes by working through the Erin minor hockey ranks and can claim Pro vincial and Silver Stick champion ships to his credit The team has thus far lost only three players from last years squad and top scorer Peter Cargill is expected to return At this point the goalfending situation is still somewhat up in the air and the defence will need rebuilding Especially after the loss of stalwart Steve Wagner to overage However the potential to be a contender for league laurels is there A recent OHA decision brought the contending possibility one step closer to reality In years past the Sabres had on ly been allowed to draw from Halton Region The club had ap plied to have Peel Region added to their territory but this request was turned down Instead the OHA granted the Sabres the right to recruit as nonimports players from Wellington County This means Acton can draw from Guelph Erin Fergus and Not necessarily the Golden Fleece but a definite im provement in terms of the size of the player pool An open camp has been scheduled Aug for Wellington County at Victoria Road Arena in Guelph The Sabres will be training throughout the month of September at Georgetowns Gor don Memorial Arena A tryout camp has- been slated
