Herald Staff An Erin man pulled a drowning Georgetown boy from the Credit River near Maple Avenue and River Road reviving him with ar tificial respiration Saturday after noon Terrv Johnson Halton Regional Police say the 13yearold boy was playing with some friends when he was pulled under by an undertow Terry Johnson 33 entered the river and carried the boy ashore then per formed artificial respiration police say Mr Johnson stayed with the boy until an ambulance arrived The boy was treated at Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital He has since been discharged hospital officials say Mr Johnson was working in the back of Blackbox Controls when he heard the boys friend scream ing I have two kids of my own so I recognized the scream was so meone in trouble he said Mr Johnson first saw the boy come up from the undertow then dove into the water scraping his nose on the river bed He pulled the boy to an island located near the dam in that area When I looked at him his eyes were open but there was nothing there I thought hewasdeadsaidMr Johnson Mr Johnson checked the boys heart beat and found it to be er ratic I gave him mouthtomouth for three or four breaths and then he started to breathe normally Mr Johnson said The boy started to talk in coherently he said He thought he was still under water Mr Johnson explained Mr Johnson then attempted to calm the boy After a while Mr Johnson said the boy would touch his face and thank him over and over again At one point the boy said he was dizzy Mr Johnson turned the boy on to his stomach so he could spit out the water in his titled Work Oriented Workshops or WOW says the goal of the summer program is to keep encouraging participants to continue their education WOW places about 10 students between 1416 years old in various jobs each summer Alternating between the job and several workshops the Idea is to give the students life skills theyll need later in life When students enter the WOW program they attend a workshop for the first week Then its off to a work placement where the YES program pays the salary of the stu dent Each Friday the student returns to Georgetown for a workshop After another week in the workshop learning life skills job maintenance abilities listening to guest speakers and going on field trips the students are off to the placement again for another three weeks While employers may find it han dy to have an extra person around wed like to see a guaranteed ex perience for the kids not just thebroom attitude says Mr Sherrard The program coordinator monitors students progress regularly but I try and stay out of the way and let the employer employee relationship develop he says He stressed that employers dont any of the youths salaries Thati paid entirely by YES at the minimum wage level
