beef producers say theres no reason to be concerned about growth hormones used to fat ten their animals And they maintain a European ban on all hormone use in the beef industry is an unjustified motivated move We recognize our first priority is food safety If we dont have a healthy herd we have said Canadian Cattlemans Association vicepresident Charles In lifts the European Economic Community banned the use of nor mones in European beef lion On Jan the ban was extend ed to forbid the import of hormone- enhanced beef While the loss of exports isnt a major concern lo Canadian pro bays Gracey its impor for the industry loset the record straight on the safety of beef production practices Canadian beef producers ex ported million worth of beef last year The cattlemen held a oneday in formation session recently to ex plain their side of ihe story The cattlemen brought in scientists and officials from both sides ol the Atlantic to help fight a growing public distrust of the beef rearing process One expert Nottingham Univer sitys Lamming called a European ban on all hormone use in the beef industry an unjustified politically motivated move The EEC ban was instituted in spite of the scientific evidence as a political solution to problems of food surpluses generated by the EECs common agricultural policy says Lamming Lahyning chaired an EEC com mittee looking into steroid use in But the EEC disbanded the committee before they could make their report Lamming said members published their findings by as a scientific paper four steroid com pounds are licensed for use in Canadas beef industry Three natural compounds estradiol progesterone and testosterone and a man made compound are used to keep Canadian cattle healthy und increase their size A second man madi compound trenbolone is under review by the federal druglicensing agency Steroids are implanted in cattle with a slow release mechanism implanted behind the ear Lamming says the use of these steroids is sate Bulls raised in pastures are castrated lo prevent random breeding and unpredictable behavior Bulls are then given testosterone to replace the natural hormone produced within a bulls testes And in fact the animals are given less of the hormone than their testes would naturally pro duce Cows are given progesterone and estradiol but in a small dose Of drug than the bulls receive These steroids improve the growth rate of animals from up to per cent in cull cows and 33 per tent in steers to six per cent in bulls The amount of drug given to the animals is minimal and wont have an effect on a human unless the person eats umeasonable amounts of meat from a hormone- enhanced animal according to a cattlemans association tion paper An average woman could eat pounds of beef daily and still have their intake below the maximum allowable under federal health and welfare guidelines Lamming says there are pro blems with any steroid ban There is no way to differentiate when an animal is tested between man- placed or naturally developed testosterone oestorone and pro gesterone And the ban might also en courage more illegal use of substances to fatten herds We scientists prefer the permit led use of safe licensed products said Lamming i I I I I l I D We work together for you Halton Hills Milton Areas ALEX GLENN Georgetown Res For appointments call Alex or Barbara Glenn Royal City Really
