Main SI acton 1W3 Trie Pull I416U51 FORO Home Newspaper of rtlEE DISTRIBUTION WEDNESDAY MAY 16 PAGES Local man sues Region A Georgetown man is taking Halton Region to court over what he says is a hell of a mess in his backyard pond Bill owns a house on the southeast corner of Traflgar Road and Maple Avenue next to the North Halton Golf and Country Club His lawyer served the Region with a legal notice in March alleg ing the Region responsible for mud deposited in his pond What should be a beauty spot is a hell of a mess said Mr last week Instead of a pond full of trout we have a pond full of mud Mr Edie lives on the property near Stewarttown Road with three other senior citzens including his wife He says problems with his pond which is filled with four feet of mud began when Halton Region put in large waterways for draining purposes over years ago He says the excess water and sediment drains into his pond They removed a 12inch culvert from under the road and replaced it with a 40inch culvert he said But Haltons Commissioner of Legal Services Mark says the situation in the Edies backyard is not the Regions fault Weve been served with Mr legal statement of claim and we are going to defend this ac tion Reading the statement that weve got from Mr Edies lawyer we dont feel theres any liability said Mr Meneray This is Mr second at tempt at suing the Region He first took the government to task eight or nine years ago The Region sent him to the Credit Valley Conserva tion Authority at that time and the pond was cleaned out but only halfway says Mr Edie Sediment and washout an ero sion of soil from excessive water are to blame for buildup in the pond said Mr And while he finds the golf course surrounding his yard plea sant to look at he said his pond spoils the view day after day The Edies wake up and look out their back window every morning and see the horrible damage he said Im sure its taken a few days off our lives to have to go to court to sue these people the Region to get some kind of justice He said its the taxpayer who will account for what he calls the Regions mistake POWER lauded as Citizen of the Year Education Week Activities George Kennedy Public School French Immersion students put on their most ferocious faces In an at tempt to imitate their paper mache replica of the in famous dinosaur the Tyrannouraurus Rex that the class built as part of their study on ex tinct and endangered species This Is only one of five different dinosaurs that went on display in the schools library during education week George Kent students were not alone In doing something special during this week of celebration Some of the other creations and events put on by area schools In cluded Spring Rhythms at Centennial Middle School the musical On Broadway at Middle School the science fair at Harrison Public School Project Wild at Park Public School a Rook Fair at Public School and Spring Fan- atM JE Public School Herald photo By BRIAN Herald Staff POWER members gathered in Acton Saturday to pause and receive a hearty slap on the back for their efforts in fighting the pro posed landfill site at the Acton quarry The strong POWER Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources group was chosen as Acton Citizen of the Year by the Acton Chamber of Commerce POWER formed two years ago when news of the proposal by Reclamation Systems In corporated RSI to put a landfill in the quarry was made public POWER President Ruth French and about 50 of its members were on hand at the Acton Citizens Band Hall to celebrate the honor and to promote the fight against the dump The strength of the group members said Ms French adding that many put in 20 to 30 hours a week on environmental issues sur rounding the dump proposal on top of their fulltime jobs Former town councillor Sheldon herself a vocal opponent of the landfill site said the group has earned the respect of the local business community the media and the citizens of Hills POWERS public awareness campaign has helped spark a growing interest in the group despite a tendency for ratepayers groups to lose interest over a long period of time said Mrs Sheldon Instead their support is grow ing and because of them I predict that there will be no garbage dump In the Ac ton quarry The group also received colades from Chrisfiim Pages
