from April 30 to May We are very lucky to have a guest artist at the classical brunch on Sunday April 30 who can appreciate both the art of music and the wonderful town we live in He is David Harding a Georgetown resident and a world class viola player A viola is a str ing instrument somewhat in bet ween a cello and a violin It has a lower register with a darker richer tone than a violin and is slightly larger David will be featured in duet with Mika Chang on a grand piano brought to the gallery for the occasion They will provide us with an hour of exciting classical pieces Its no surprise that David is a musician since he lived in a home full of music The son of local music teacher Bruce Harding and Margaret Harding David has returned to his roots and plans to make Georgetown his home base He is renovating a house with a music studio to practise his art but has no plans to teach since his busy performing schedule wont allow it David is currently playing with the Toronto Symphony and Miserables He has been called to play at Phantom of the Opera a position which be is too busy to ac cept at this time He has no agent but is welt known m musical circles and gets calls to do or chestral work for films television commercials TV movies and CBC radio David finds the work ex hilarating but exhausting especially the three straight hours in the Royal Alexander orchestra pit Les Miserables has no dialogue to provide a break Davids musical training in eludes a year at the Interlaken Arts Academy in Interlaken Michigan a year studying with Tibor Vaghy at Queens University in Kingston and four years at the Julhard School of Music in New York He has won twice at the Tertis International Viola Competition in England and winning the prestigious Sir John Barbirolli prize He has played in New York Geneva Japan China and Hong Kong and looks forward to performing to a hometown audience David attended Georgetown District High School where Ralph Ursel was his first ysar music teacher He also played fiddle in Brampton Musical Societys My Fair Lady which Ralph was direc ting at the time David thinks that Ralph did a lot for our town musically and so he is very pleased to music laid in and everyone is now polishing their act for the opening of the Georgetown Little Theatres Jekyll and Hyde this Friday April 21 at the John Elliott Theatre This is always an interesting time in rehearsal because the ac tors start to wonder if everything is going to come together Usually unbeknownst to us the backstage people have everything under con trol and are just waiting for the shew to move to the theatre to put the finishing touches on Hie play seems so much different when you are in costume and the stage is set up in the proper atmosphere The music the lights the sound effects the realistic props and set all add another dimension to the lines that you are giving Suddenly it seems perfectly right to be speaking and moving In theway of century gentlefolk This has been a special pleasure for most of us because of the tender guidance of Fred Thury a profes sional director hired with some help from Theatre Ontario Fred has experience in many areas of directing The one that might be most easily recognizable is the Olympic Torch Relay Fred was responsible for directing all of the ceremonies regarding the Torch Relay from the time it arrived at the east coast from Greece to the time that it crossed into the stadium in Calgary a truly awesome task In addition to this he has directed many other plays and musical presentations in universities and other venues If
