Page 14 THE HERALD Wednesday March IMS Canada should operate as a business residents say Well Ive been doing this job for four months now and were three months into Time for some accounting We had a Town Hall meeting last week in the Inglewood hall and by the time everybody came wed run out of chairs One of the themes coming out of that meeting is that Canada should be operated like a business and no successful business spends 30 per cent more than it makes every year I agree And so you the shareholders of HaltonPeel deserve a quarterly report Ive spent the last 90 days as ef fectively as I could There were four Town Hall meetings and a ma jor free trade seminar for businesses Another seminar this one on free trade and agriculture will take place this Thursday in Georgetown Gordon Alcott Arena 30am to 2 30 m featuring a bevy of speakers from Ottawa Ive appointed two citizens ad visory committees one on taxation and the other on free trade Short ly 111 be naming the members of our very important environment committee During the last three months Ive met with most local councillors and regional officials along with speaking to hundreds of people with problems or suggestions Dorothy and I have enjoyed spec ding most nights out at community events more and more On The Hill With Garth Turner people I have updated my Citizens Guide to Free Trade and produced a similar booklet explaining the proposed national sales tax In Ot tawa Ive met privately with Finance Minister Mike Wilson and have been working with him as be ponders his coming budget In short its been a busy sometimes exhausting always ex hilarating time Now its off to Ottawa for awhile Parliament opens next Monday and there is going to be a lot of ac tion on the Hill Right now we have rising interest rates as the Bank of Canada tries to slow down the economy but at the same time avoid recession Its a delicate balancing act Then theres Wilsons budget this time a crucially important document As shareholders you should know that were bankrupt with billion in national debt and a shortfall of billion a year In the budget Obviously this cant go on much longer which means Ottawa has to pull back hard on the spen ding throttle Im 100 per cent behind the feds doing that Its been too long that politicians have been lazy about the state of Canadas finances Its cheating the future to run deficits and build up debt our grand children will be saddled with unbelievably high taxes and a fall ing standard of living if we con tinue Wilson knows he has my support on working towards a balanced budget and I hope I have yours We may be broke but were sure not broken Your investment can still turn J out to be golden but getting that return will require a lot of political guts and public will Its not easy for politicians to tell people theyre going4o get less in stead of more But its got to hap pen Ignoring reality has a downside which is what the middleclass folks in Argentina Brazil and Venezuela have learn ed So in Ottawa over the next few weeks Ill be spreading the message that Ive heard in our Town Hall meetings on the telephone and in hundreds of let ters Fix things and fix them now With luck and your support shareholders can look forward to big dividends down the road A FINAL REMINDER As Parliament opens again Id like to share the experience with you Dorothy and I will be
