LETTERS Has the price been too high Dear Sir It would appear that the world has completely reversed itself What once was called good is now called bad and bad Is now called good If a man is a gentleman of good manners he is called a wimp If a woman chooses to stay home to care for her family rather than to pursue a career of her own she is labelled odd strange and not belonging to the permissive me generation The Bible says a man is to be head of his household to love and respect his wife to apply discipline to his children with a firm but kindly hand not harsh or cruel so as not to alienate them The woman is to love and respect her husband to rear her children to be kind caring and respectful persons Too few lit tie children today can run to their mothers to have their hurts kissed away They are much more likely to be confronted by a stranger and to be told not to be a cry baby The damage this can cause to a small childs personality is in calculable Thousands of young people have never known a sense of security or belonging This is the pattern they carry into their adult lives They give no quarter and receive none resulting in the crimeridden violent world in which we live today An increasing number of women have become heads of govern ments colleges large corpora tions banks etc They have become TV anchor judges lawyers and are found in the pulpit Even military and police forces are not immune from this invasion Before this onslaught men are increasingly being relegated to lower positions some even don aprons and are call ed bouse husbands while the wife becomes the breadwinner The old saying that behind every successful man is a woman no longer applies We cannot all be rich the Bible says the poor will always be with us but with all the relief agencies and social programs In our western world no one needs to go hungry or be without shelter But we consider ourselves deprived if we do not have our color TV microwave ovens automatic dishwashers etc In a TV interview a prominent member of Womens Lib told bow she had taken Into her home a single parent with a small child She said that the joy she received when arriving home to be welcom ed by this small child made her wonder if Womens Lib was as at tractive as she had once thought In another interview the mother of another noted advocate of Womens Lit wondered if her daughter as she grew older would receive the comfort and understan ding she needed from a cold typewriter As the number of abor tions increase and the Womens Liberation movement grows wouldnt this suggest that the western world will ultimately be faced with a serious problem of underpopulfltion It would appear that manwoman made laws are not working Lawlessness and are classic examples of what is meant Isnt it time that we turned our world back to its proper order the one that cur Maker or dained from the beginning of time Shalom Gladys E Barrett We all have a part to do Dear Sir I am writing to you a letter that was printed in your paper Jan 18 and written by Wainwright of Acton The reader was enthusiastic about the new Hills blue box program but suggested that if cer tain plastics could not be recycled the program should not be plemented at all Plastics are nonbiodegradable materials and from what I have read most cannot be recycled One simple solution to this problem is for consumers to buy returnable milk jugs so they can be reused to make other plastic products rather than buying milk bags which get thrown away We can reduce the problem of plastic shop ping bags by getting into the habit of reusing them or bringing baskets with us when shopping Excess plastic bags could be given to markets food coops or used clothing stores in order to reduce the possibility of their ending up in incinerators only to emit furons and other hazardous substances into the air which con taminate our soil and food sup plies Every year plastic bags end up in the oceans where they kill about one million seabirds and 100000 marine animals as a result of the ingestion of plastic wastes A recent quote summed up the recycling program well This year alone the Halton Hills recycl ing program is expected to collect more than 780 tonnes of recyclable materials and save more than 9600 trees in the process We can achieve close to total recycling of our waste right now if we all as consumers purchase recyclable products such as glass bottles over lined cartons for juice and if we collectively demand manufacturers to produce less throwaway packaging and more environmentally friendly pro ducts Thank you Sincerely Rajiv Georgetown Glen puts icing on their rink Dear Sir Last Saturday Jan 14 saw the slippery opening of the Glen Williams ice rink in the ballpark As you know a last minute freeze resulted in fine conditions and the ice breaking party was a lot of fun for skaters town councillors and other residents The rink rats an undoubtedly motley crew of ice wizards have asked to make sure that everyone involved is properly thanked so with your assistance in publishing this letter we hope that all deserv ing individuals will consider themselves pronounced game stars of ice skating in the Glen Two individuals however must be singled out First where would our merry party have been without Preston who blessed the rats and friends with a complimen tary selection of his finest hot dogs Thanks Second who but Ted Mands and family would have put up with all that equipment being stored not to mention the office space Ted pro vided Where did the electricity line the rats used come from Hydro compliments of We hope everyone in the Glen gets down to the rink Sincerely The Glen Williams Town Hall Committee A very sincere thanks Dear Sir The skaters coaches and parents of the Georgetown Figure Skating Club Precision teams would like to thank the members of the Georgetown Lions Chib for their donation towards the ex penses of our teams We appreciate the support and encouragement as we prepare to enter competitions in the next few weeks We will do our best to repre sent Georgetown well in and Mount Forest Sincerely Joan Dawson Fundraising Chairman When it comes to slogans were just bush league All right Its time to face a com plex and deeply troubling geopolitical question If Western democracy truly is as we so fervently believe superior to communism in all its manifestations then why can we never come up with any decent slogans The question came forcibly to mind while reading news reports about the recent clashes between Chinese and African students at Chinese universities Following allegations that an African male had tried to accost a Chinese woman in a dormitory it was reported that several hundred Chinese students staged a demonstration bearing signs reading Severely punish the hoodlum There It is Theres the whole thing in a nutshell Can you imagine Canadian students bearing signs saying Severely punish the hoodlum How many Canadian students could muster such rhetorical elo quence in a time of emotional stress Heck how many of them could spell hoodlum Now this is not to say that com munist slogans are invariably bet ter than ours Karl Marx came up with tons of slogans but a lot of them are badly flawed Workers of the world unite has a certain inspiring ring but its emotional appeal is limited by the fact that it does after all refer to work Given a choice between Workers of the world unite and a comparable Western slogan like say You deserve a break today most of us would opt for McDonalds Karl failed to grasp this crucial truth about human nature which is why his theories have never really worked A lot of contemporary Soviet terms and slogans are pretty mediocre too True the West eirs View News Service seems terribly enamored of Gor bachevs vaunted campaign of perestroika but Ive always suspected this may be a subliminal response to the fact that sounds a lot like a brand of vodka Prime Minister Mulroney could probably win overwhelming sup port for his next major initiative too if he called it Glenf But the fact remains that were hopelessly bushleague when com pared with the Chinese Every Chinese slogan Ive ever heard seems wonderfully lofty and literate things like to the teachings of the glorious helmsman or Utterly repudiate the criminal Gang of Four Part of this of course has to do with a difference in national temperament Canadians dont coin slogans about glorious leaders because we frankly have trouble putting glorious and leader in the same sentence When we want to define our leaders we have historically tend ed to turn to other words beginning with g like gumball or geek And granted eloquent slogans lack a certain punch It would be tough to mount an effective cam paign urging people to Respond in the negative to moodaltering substances or to Avoid assiduously the operation of motor vehicles in the aftermath of the im bibing of intoxicants The Armed Forced might not at tract a lot of recruits with a series of TV spots stressing the notion that Theres no existence that of fers a reasonable facsimile and comparatively few motorists would be impressed with the claim that Ford has a superior result of the cognitive process Still just imagine how a few classy slogans would raise the whole tone of Canadian society Imagine if the Tories bad based their election campaign on the elo quent appeal Affirm the wisdom of expediting the exchange of com modities and services And if the Liberals and New Democrats had responded with the timehonored and genteel of the Canadian nationalist American return promptly to your place of domicile Gee Its something to think about isnt it And in the meantime do enjoy a fortuitous 24hour period
