should have fired me before Christmas quipped Milton coach Gary Ford after his squad allowed seven unanswered Raider goals in the third period of the Dec 27 contest Ford had received a vote of confidence from the Milton management just prior to Christmas The Merchants and Raiders both came out flying in the first period as only one penalty was called in a fastpaced 11 tie Milton scored three goals in the second period to command a lead heading into the final frame Curtis Green replaced starter Todd King in the third period as Sturgeon looked to shake up his troops and shake they did as a sevengoal barrage soon buried Milton Raiders drilled 30 shots at Miltons Jeff Clark in the final minutes Kevin Dance potted the winner at 1538 picking up a rebound and outwaiting Clark before popping the puck upstairs Five minutes later Dance was tossed from the game after roughing up Milton Brian The Merchants blueliner was ap parently injured on the play but emerged from the Milton dressing room and attempted to get a piece of Dance in the penalty box Cooler heads prevailed and Haringa was tagged with a gross misconduct We played two good periods but youve got to play for three lamented Ford who was disap pointed with the lack of discipline displayed by some of his players A couple of guys can spoil It they need more discipline Milton captain Chris got the gate near the end Paul home in Halton Hills for the Christmas break of bis first few weeks at the American university But after that its just a matter of getting used to things One of the things Paul said hes had to get used to is not winning every race As a steeplechaser at Georgetown the exRebel never lost a race in his grade year and virtually ran away with the SAA gold medal in Etobicoke The Big Ten converence is pro bably the toughest in the US and Im not in a winning situation yet he explained I had to get used to being in the top rather than the top 10 Still Paul is pleased with his pro gress At Purdue he was ranked among the top three Boilermaker crosscountry runners by seasons end His best finish was a fourth in a dual meet with Miami of Ohio The intense training regimen of a big time US collegiate track squad also took a bit of getting us ed to said Paul I really had to adjust to the increased mileage Before Purdue I had probably run over 10 miles only three times my life Now Im doing that every day I was getting killed in the longer runs early in the season but after two or three months I was do ing well he said Ive also ex perienced less injuries than I did when I was training less While Purdue is known academically for its engineering course Paul is studying physical education and he said the classroom schedule is no less demanding Ive got 730 am classes every morning so I have to get up at six to get a 40minute run he says recounting the dally routine After breakfast its straight to class where youre usually half asleep By the end of the term I was pretty tired Id come back to the dorm from class and just sleep for two or three hours But Its all just a matter of adjusting In the aftermath of Ben Johnson affair at the Seoul Sum mer Olympics Paul says hes the butt of some goodnatured ribbing Yeah I get a lot of jokes about be ing Canadian he laughed But steroid abuse is a senous matter at Purdue with all varsity athletes submitting to urine tests at the beginning of each season said Paul He says he doesnt know of anyone on the track team using performance enhancing drugs I dont know about the football team but as far as our team goes I dont know of anyone whos using steroidshesaid As for life in the lower 48 Paul finds it agreeable Its different some ways and not so different in others he said Americans in general dont seem to know a lot about Canadians sometimes you can really put one over on them about everyone using dogsleds and stuff like that Meanwhile Paul will be hard at it upon his return to Purdue in the new year gearing up for a spring outdoor season that will probably see him run the 1500 and 5000 as well as the steeplechase Paul may in fact be the lone steeplechaser on the Boilermaker team Our senior guy is only and he trouble clearing the threefoot barriers quipped Paul Erler Sheppard lead Chiefs The Georgetown Packaging Minor Peewee Chiefs did not celebrate the holiday season with a successful Milton Beaver
