SECTION A THE HERALD Wednesday August 10 HERALDl Entertainment Cinematic fare on the home screen I M AT I AT THE MOVIES ii sen By Herald Special my aversion to violent movies I am skipping the Dead Pool and Rescue lo review recent HOUSEKEEPING This Is the latest movie from Scot director Bill Forsyth Local Hero time Forsyth leaves Scotland for northwest USA and on odd American family Christ In pi ay a Sylvlc an Itinerant aunt who comes to took after her two orphaned nieces The girls are wise and observant teenagers who quickly realize that Is not your average guardian The household gradually erodes under Sytvlc a erratic housekeeping and scavenging can bring herself to throw much away Lucille the younger of the two mutinies and leaves home for the security of a teachers house stays and gradually falls into Sylvle Sylvies slightly loopy world This Is a lovely film set In a beautiful part of the world with a sad and somber feel to It at times Thla Is by far most serious of Forsyth films and while the characters do dlaptay that trademark looniness they are also slightly tragic and doomed Lahti is superb one of the ve seen in a while A new direction for Forsyth but not an un successful one HOPE AND GLORY John Boorman Oscar nominated homage to World War II England follows the war through the eyes of a smalt boy named Billy Billy his two sisters and mother suffer through the London blitz For Billy It a a new world full of excitement and fear Death is random and somewhat unreal war is a game and small boys are tougher than the enemy This is a charming film quiet and leisurely a pleasure to look at Sarah Miles in one of her least ritotlng performances is Billy mother the centre of his world She goes wrong and quite mad I liked the last half hour especially Billy grandfather is simply delightful crazy but fun liked this film lot It not going to keep on the edge of your scat but it Is quite satisfy SLAM DANCE This is a bizarre film trying to do too much and never quite knowing where it going It is a movie devoted to Images and while many of them are striking the effect Is hollow and ultimately Tom is Charles a cartoonist who finds himself drawn into a strange and terrifying world of sex scandal and corruption An affair with a stunning blonde with a mysterious past Jeads him to ble Yolanda is found dead and is a suspect As the story unfolded I found it hard to believe that anyone like would have an affair with someone as stupid as Drood The plot never quite gels and often ritates there Is too much artiness and not enough Intelligence I still liked the movie mostly because of Tom and Virginia Madsen But isn I terribly good and does disappoint It Is however an Interesting failure Conservation areas kept under patrol Maintaining quality
