M and M Bantams beat by Brampton in OMHA quarterfinal playoff series SECTION THE HERALD The M and Pro Sports Bantam hockey team quest for an Ontario Minor Hockey Association title was halted recently as they were swept three games straight In a five quarterfinal playoff series with Brampton The M and squad advanced to the showdown with Brampton by first eliminating Burlington in a three match up with a victory In the deciding game of the set Burlington took advantage of twoman advantage to score the first goal of the game late in the opening period But in the second It was all Georgetown as Jim English trig the attack scoring twice In a ninesecond span Chad Bailey and Dale McNlven drew assists on both tallies Georgetown was all over Burl ington throughout the period but were unable lo add to their 1 lead until late In the third when McNlven scored from Craig Cooper and English With Just over a minute remaining in regulation time Burlington pulled their goalie In favor of an extra at lacker and the move paid off as they scored to close the Georgetown lead to Burlington continued to press with their man advantage in hopes or ty the game But Mark Mlninch picked up the puck in the Georgetown end and slipped across to Rod who head manned It to Wade centre Ice broke In on the empty net and scored with Just six seconds left despite having a Burlington players stick tossed across the Ice to hinder him Moving into the quarterfinals Georgetown was awarded he home ice advantage due to their superior standing In league play over Bramp ton by one point Brampton held a distinct edge in play between the two teams during the season as and could only manage one win In their meetings With Just over five minutes re maining in the opening games first period Bill McDonald put he locals on he scoreboard with a goal from Rich Bond and However Brampton replied to tie the game with a minute and a half left in the period Georgetown regained the lead in he second with a goal by Serjeant son from McDonald and and another by Dave Walls from Just seconds opart to make it 31 But Brampton fought back to tie It again with a pair of goals in he final four minutes of he period The only scoring ploy of he third belonged to Brampton and they held on for he victory to take he one- game lead In the scries Only 10 minutes in penalties were called in he contest six against Georgetown Game In the series was played Feb 14 in Things looked blight for he and crew as hey got rolling early with a goal by from Serjeant Matters quickly grew dim however as Brampton exploded for six goals before once again evened matters up wit a slapshot from Bandits Snowjacks in spotlight There are no standings this week as there is a need check out the true situation following a couple of differences with he chart on the Legion board There Is nothing substantially in correct the leaders arc the leaders Hustlers and Golden Flights in he First Division and Snowjacks and High Rollers in the Second Division Bottom dogs ore Firemen Eliminators respectively Pride of place this week in Ihe reporting section Is divided between Bandits and of he Se cond Division Bandits defeated place Inter County and Snow jacks under pressure defeated In the end I go for my own squad for a change were faced with their nearest challengers a default win by as they Aces Answering the challenge with a win over Aces was a fairly good response Over the past few weeks ihe Snows have struggled through and this time came through when re quired Yours truly had a good week after rubbish of the previous week Four starts and three finishes Is not bad Joe Calms four starts Is also a fair showing Bryan Turner closed one game and snot 112 as Gerry Wallace closed the other game As Hat Hilts of Aces said You guys only lei us at a finish twice and we had to take them Meanwhile Bandits won the first gome and- lost ihe next three and looked to be out before coming with the two Paul started three and George Powell finished two with Ian Lee knocking Bruce Hope started four and finished three one start being 112 Art Cosens shot 113 and Terry Han cock 115 Bulldogs kept In contention with their win over as Don Robinson and Jay Bishop hit 140s and Don a 121 Dave Beaumont and Joe also hitting 140s Paul set the Second Divi high start with 143 tor Taxmen in ihe match Hustlers continued on their merry way in the first running up over luckless Independents Bol opened with and Jim Franks Jim Nicholson and Pcler Buckley shot tons However Beau Beaumont had four starts two finishes and a start Williams had two finishes and two Ray Ing is had two closes That did it Panthers and Ensigns had a real set to before Ensigns came out on top No details I sorry to say but must have been a scorcher I do know that Ensigns were shorthand and won two of their games ploy a dummy player Write about some folk and their game seems to Improve like George Powell and Jim Fisher Fisher fooled us all with a 120 finish this week after last weeks mention John Mills shot 140 and Dennis hit lie Murphy had three starts and a finish Mike Pepper had two starts and three finishes Laurie Hopkins htghed on ill Tim Field on 125 and Grant Richardson shot a ton Exports were another shorthand ed outfit and came through against Firemen to win the odd game in This weeks matchups art potential hot game between and Hustlers and another with ports and Mights in opposition should not hove much trouble with Firemen and a low team clash with Panthers and In dependents rounds off the First Second Division Snowjacks face near challengers Bulldogs Aces Bandits could surprise Hollers on recent form and In County have a free with a nine game default win Surprise What can I say Who would have thought it hie A team from Georgetown Legion Branch 120 qualifying for the district championships from the zone plonships Yes Indeed a team did qualify However not Ihe one which most observers would expect Brian Beaumont Tim all started all scored and all finished and it was a treat for the young bloods of the in league s First Division Hustlers and Golden Flights lo be led by this old hand from the Second Division Snowjacks I must describe one finish that of Tim Field Faced with he clob bered treble for leaving 16 He promptly hit double eight leaving the same double and he struck it beautifully to win the match
