the HERALD Larry Grossman the street fighter Home Newspaper of Halton Hills Established A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Street Georgetown Ontario GARNET Publisher and General Manager J STEVEN FOREMAN Advertising Phone sdtiwiunniiiiintrwu Page October I Boom is lowered The Acton and Georgetown Chambers have lowered the boom They ve jointly issued a public report card on Regional and Town government Their consensus enough being done to promote business development in Hills That s a bitter pill to swallow for the accused We re not convinced the blame lies entirely with government however When comparing Georgetown and Acton to and Burlington there are going to be some differences Our neighboring giants to the south are close to a key transpor tation network and spill off industries they are supported by a large population base Both are close to a cheap and available supply of water for servicing But the Acton and Georgetown Chamber members who met last week are on the right track The Town and the Region need to be reminded that Halton Hills can t be forgotten when there are op to encourage business to expand in this area We agree it s important for the two Chambers to attend regular council meetings and making their collective voice heard Politicians need to be reminded of their concern and sincerity The business development officers at the Region are a bright bunch of go getters Why not ask them to attend Chamber meetings and have them report any progress that would help the Hills business community Make them more accountable This historic first meeting between the Chambers can lead to many joint projects to lobby council and to promote tourism A Chamber office for all of Halton Hills would be a good start The Chambers can work with our municipal and regional levels of government A Chamber offering to do its share can only reinforce government awareness of a problem that needs the cooperation of local Chambers Taxpayers burden We count ourselves as nationalists patriotic to the flag the country the image of Canada as a separate strong in dependent country But further legislation to promote Canadian consent pro graming is an absurd decision especially if the costs are going to be paid for by the average tax paying Canadian We have no qualms with Canadian content programing that is supported by advertising But a recently released report on Canadian broadcasting suggests a 5 per cent tax on the sale of VCRs video casset tes and satellite dishes The Task Force on Broadcasting Policy also wants an all news CBC channel in part paid for by a 25 cent charge to cable subscribers If that isn t enough the Task Force recommends in creasing Canadian content to per cent between and 11pm White the broadcast policy report does make some good recommendations we suggest it should have concentrated more on quality Canadian programs The only way to at tract viewers is create shows that are worth watching that have a Canadian angle As the report indicates private television needs to do more especially when it has proven their business is immensely profitable Is it sour grapes Hamilton Flying high If the polls are right tin 1ro Conservatives are going to get thumped in he next election But you d never have known it from their convention here thdr first nan leadership gathering In six The 1400 people 1 100 delegates who attended left happy One parly official bet reporters she buy the lunch if they could find a disgruntled delegate She t have lo make good Leader Larry Grossman made the best speech heard from any Conservative in a decade fie had the delegates cheering and stores as a threat to the family thqy leaped to their feet In a thunderous ovation was lough partisan rhetoric the sort of speech that reinforced For delegates the reasons lhe were Tories distinct from I or New Democrats The Ontario of today was hulll by Ihem over and Ihey could be proud of it he told them Editor notebook but Is it sour grapes Perhaps me likes competing against who plays by a different set of rules businessman came us recent to talk about what he fell was air competition Our visitor takes pride In his work evident enough He tells about an iron clad contract he gives to customers which fairly estimates the work that has lo be done He reports his luxes he pays for a I Mi loess phone unemployment in sun net workmen compensation liability insurance and all Ihe ex necessary to run business His problem is that work he is quoting for is being under bid by as much as per cent by some of his competitors He feels his competitors out the same amounl or ex he is paying Their overhead therefore is lower Why should we be penalized for doing It the way should be done he asks Our visitor feels it Is Ihe towns responsibility to enlighten ratepayers about renovators who properly covered or who paying for certain government programs An example he gives Is liability in If a renovator Isn I covered for liability the homeowner may be responsible for injuries sustained by hired help on their property he sale Although a homeowner may already carry liability Insurance it may not be enough to pay for any potential lawsuit he claims Enter town The town currently issues a renovator licence Jobs must be done cording to Ihe building code If there ore complaints a licence might not be rclssued said Jack Lusty ihe town bylaw enforcement officer Our visitor is paying these costs because Ihe province requires it when you ve gol Mr Lusty said if a person works for you it required by provincial statute Do we need more government con trol over renovators Thai a debate not easily won by either side It depends on what you believe a government role should be In society In the meantime people can be careful and make heir own right choices Here a short checklist of things to watch for get a written estimate with a price breakdown one that is signed and agreed upon by both parlies check references If a
