Staff Sergeant Bill Gail calls his police com munity relations work a totally different world from his background with the identification bureau It puts your perspective back in order and you realize not everyone are thieves or bandits he said Sgt Gall spent five years with the ident bureau before becoming a public relations of ficer and joining the community relations bureau of the Halton regional police when the bureau began in July In your contacts with the public are per cent victims This job is completely different with a whole new set of rules Youre away from reactive and into proactive policing which is a refreshing change hesaid The community relations bureau was formed as a result of the amalgamation of the safety crime prevention and public relations units Although the safety and crime prevention units still exist in each municipality Sgt Gall and Sgt Dave Atkinson oversee operations from headquarters in Oakville They in turn report to the bureau com mander Rick Kivell The community relations bureau keeps the media and community informed plus coor dinating all public speaking engagements coordinating public police displays and making the public more aware of any aspect involving crime Sgt Atkinson said the Halton regional police gave talks in an effort to improve the interraction between the community and police and provide a better understanding of what the police do Talks are presented to elementary high school and college students community groups service clubs and businesses Topics range from bicycle safety for children to van dalism and anything to do policing Stationed at headquarters since January Set Atkinson started his police work in Port Elgin on a small town force I felt restricted in a small force and felt there was more opportunity in a larger force I thought was one of the most progressive forces Sgt Atkinson said on his decision to join them in 1976 He has been a uniformed officer coroners constable and was in the criminal in vestigations department in Burlington before his present position Hornbys Lynn Frederick is a versatile artist By KELLY WILSON Herald Staff Frederick says she is scared silly but looking forward to her upcoming oneman art in starting May It will be the first display in a gallery art show for the Hornby resident The show will run for four weeks at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery in was trying to evaluate my work myself by comparing my work to some in galleries said Mrs Frederick Now I will let the public and critics decide how good I am she said Mrs Fredericks art is very diverse Her favorite activity right now is producing water- color and acrylic landscapes of the flora of the Halton Victoria and Hahburton areas She is also currently developing a series of water- colors depicting women industry Mrs Frederick uses watercolors oils acrylics pastels as well as charcoal and pen and ink Im more of an impressionist than a realist she said Mrs Frederick is employed as an artist- illustrator for Northern Telecom She has worked there for 19 years Art must run in Mrs Fredericks family her sister is an artist in England and her daughter is also an artist Art has been an interest of Mrs Fredericks for as long as she can remember As a child in England she would enter art con tests in newspapers with her sister to earn ex tra pocket money We would expect that one or the other of us if not both would win she said We always did win some money even if it was just a little bit Mrs Frederick has painted for years selling the paintings to friends For the last year she has not sold any of her paintings in stead keeping them for her show She will be showing between and 45 paintings Mrs Frederick has learned about art from her years as a technical illustrator by taking various night and correspondence cour ses and by trial and error While her children were small Mrs Frederick did freelance work for many ferent clients including automotive manuals Hornby artist Frederick displays a few of her paintings The versatile artist will be showing to of her paintings at her first show In starting May drawings of Trinity College School for caled special awards and Christmas cards Three years ago Mrs Frederick designed a set of her own depicting flowers The cards are for sale at the Art Gallery of On tario and Paper and Things in Toronto as well as some other places Mrs Frederick calls her home studio where she works the House of Rons In the studio she experiments with abstract realistic impressionist styles for lan dscapes and seascapes and does portraits Mrs Frederick is a member of the Art Gallery of Ontario a member of the Royal On tario Museum and a voting member of the Oak ville Art Society NORMA FERGUSON She taught 9 years in a rural school By KICH CIIIOVITTI Herald Special Norma Ferguson is a retired school teacher with thirty years of teaching experien ce She has lived in Georgetown since 1963 but started her teaching career at a placed called Stormont County in Eastern Ontario at a rural school where grades one to eight were all in the same class room After nine years at the rural school Nor ma then taught in that town for four years only in a more normal class situation She then moved on to teach at the late Chapel Street school which has since been torn down She taught at Chapel School for ten years and from there Norma went to the more modern Joseph Gibbons for seven years and retired from there four years ago Favorite Magazine National Geographic Favorite Movie The Sound of Music and Gone With The Wind Favorite TV Show I really like the special series and Winds of War Favorite Vacation Place Anywhere in British Columbia because I have relatives living there but I especially like the Butchard Gardens in Victoria BC Favorite Restaurant The Jade Gar dens in Cornwall I love their Egg Rolls Favorite Music I dont like the loud stuff I like country especially Anne Murray Hobbles Knitting rughooking and ten ding to her plants and flowers Favorite Right after WWI with all of our friends coming back from overseas It was a very happy time What do you hope to be doing ten years from now Id still like to be able to get up and travel when I want to I hope nothing will prevent my husband or I from doing that
