Russiani angrily denies goon hockey charges Herald Editor Georgetown Gemini coach Jules has reacted angrily to charges that ho sends his players out to deliberately hurt members of the opposing team calling the accusations out and out lies The charges were by Blades coach Ken Moodle alter a recent game in Oakvllle In wHlch the Blades topped the Gems B3 The Gems filled up two complete game sheets with penalti Including IS minors a game misconduct and five major In an interview with The Herald charged that employed bush league tactics In the penalty filled contest and said that the slow Gemini start this season six wins in 17 outings is the result of Russlanis coaching tactics They hove a good hockey team but theyre where they are In the standings because they dont concentrate on playing hockey said Oakvllle general manager Murray Walker told repor ters that Russlanis stoneage view of hockey will ruin the league He said he plans to complain formally to both the Ontario Hockey Association and the Georgetown Gemini executive told The Herald this week he has never sent a player out to deliberately injure anyone Sure I stress body contact thats how we won in the playoffs last year Russian explained We dont do it with cheap dirty shots however Russian suggested Walker still has hard feelings about the Gems upsetting the powerful Blad es in opening round of the playoffs last year We just might do it again this year said Gemini president Bob Sr said the charges levelled by Moodie and Walker were blown out of proportion Our guys took a few penalties down there but nothing out of the ordinary The club president endorsed Russiani 100 per cent adding that he has never known to order a player to try and Injure another player president Brent said he has yet to near from the Blades about the game In question He added that if Walker does a formal complaint he may decide to investigate Ladds added that he has never received a complaint about the Gemini organization or about coaching methods In the past vouncs ITD Open Until 00 PHONE the HERALD Local soccer in big trouble I met with three desperate meh last week Their predictions for the Georgetown sports community through thesummer of were pretty bleak The three men were Klaus Zander presl dent of the Georgetown Youth Soccer Club former treasurer Colin Murray and former secretary Gary Their message was serious and straightforward The GYSC they predict will not survive the winter as It exists today It may fold altogether at the very best It will resurface in a restructured format It may become a rep club offering organized soccer to only the best young players in town It may operate with a limited enrollment offering recreational soccer to the first 300 registrants These men t alarmists They overreacting and they arent cry babies They have served the Georgetown soccer community a combined years though as coaches admlni and executive members and they honestly feel the club facing real crisis The club held Its annual general meeting Sunday November 13 Nine people turned out and that Includes Zander and Murray The three men estimate that an organization such as the GYSC needs a minimum of 12 executive officers to function properly To operate legally the club must have an elected president secretary and treasurer Thats according to the clubs own constitution President Zander is In for another term Spiller and Murray want to leave the executive for lessdemanding roles but noone will step forward to take on their executive duties Unlike hockey and baseball soccer Is not a native Canadian sport explained to me People won get Involved because they dont know anything about the game The shame of It is as Spiller paints out that in many administrative positions you dont have to know anything about soccer He means simply that you dont ha ve to be an avid fan of the game to order team sweaters chalk a field phone players or schedule games COLIN MURRAY GARY Treasurer Murray is the veteran of the group having tolled for Ihe GYSC since 1968 He remembers a time when people actually fought over positions on the executive Now he Is pessimistic about the future of minor soccer In Georgetown Peel Hal ton Is the hotbod of minor soccer in Ontario with some kids playing There were more than 900 youngsters playing In Georgetown last summer Still whenMurraysentaletter outlast year to 120 registered coaches in the Georgetown area asking for their help for the upcoming season he got Just replies Murray organized a coaching clinic two years ago with the intention of helping a few native Canadian fathers become familiar enough with the game that they might want to help coachan atom or squirt outfit He was pleasantly surprised when dads signed up to participate He was jolted back to earth when dads actually showed up for the clinic Last years coaching clinic run by met with even less response The interest Just there Murray sadly concedes I get frustrated I dont have the answers and I cant see any real solution There s a reluctance of people to give of themselves This Is the way It Is The real hard work of running the begins In January Executive members are required to attend the Peel Soccer Club meetings to register our rep teams and pay our affiliation fees Uniforms have to be ordered for the rep tea and tryouts should begin In gyms around the town The annual Ontario Soccer Association meetings take place in January and the town recreation department will soon need to know the GYSCs field requirements for the year If volunteers for the GYSC executive dont surface within the next month the club as It stands now Is finished Our first appeal is to the parents of kids who want to play soccer Murray says Unless they are going to come out their kids arent going to play soccer next summer The three desperate men want another meeting before Christmas They havent quite thrown in the towel yet If you think you can help them keep minor soccer alive In Georgetown call Klaus Zander at Colin Murray at or Gary at Kennedy out of the play Acton John Turner llerald photo by Douglas Gems crush Acton Sabres 92 Georgetown sweeps a pair on the
