Critical of teachers salaries Increases are demoralizing To he editor of The Herald In these tough econom ic times It Is indeed gratifying to see thai our elected official at the Board of Hon have seen fit give the teachers a per cent increase In salary plus Increased benefits that will raise the education taxes paid by the taxpayers by 13 per cent Perhaps board mem salaries are some how tied to teachers awards When many of us In private Industry have been ashed to gel by without any increase in salary and others have had to take salary cuts and yet others have lost la It wise for local government to spend money not yet collected on the under privileged teachers Salary Increases for In creased productivity can be Justified However I am not aware that the education system Is either a better level of education or educating more than it has In the past In fact I believe the opposite to be Salary Increases given to some while others are doing their best to make ends meet on last year levels or less have a very demoralizing effect As it Is the why should I bust my gut to get some thing done or who cares prevalent In business to day elected officials are not In tune with the problems of those who elected them and contin ue to act Irresponsibly it will not be long before the standard of living In this once great country goes right on down the toilet Any teacher who acce pts this award will lose the respect of many mem bers of the community who are willing to help try to flghl Inflationary spiral Teachers should give long hard thought to the example they will be selling both for their dents and for other com I personally am not going to set Idly by and let this happen It Is time to draw the line nowl I am going to do my bit to help local government fight inflation by calculating my 1BS3 from hose of based on the in crease In my salary for taxpayers with similar views send message to City Hall by taking this same action Your sincerely Richard M Berrie
