Page THE HERALD Wednesday October From his new posting longtime Herald sports editor Tony Panacci sends along this preview of the upcoming season in the greatly changed Georgian Hay Intermediate A Hockey League By TONY PANACCI Herald I Trying to predict final standings in Bay Intermediate A Hockey League for the com season would be a sage nightmare The league has back from last year in Georgetown Co lingwood Port Elgin and Owen Sound and has added a couple of sturdy old Senior A holdovers in and Few or the seven teams have remained stagnant over the summer They are all making changes with the most obvious being in Dun das where the Merchants have cleaned house Here is a rundown on each of the teams with the opening of the season just around the Orillia Terriers This will be I he first year In the Intermediate league for Orillia Terriers who played along with the Flyers in the now defunct Senior A league They are hoping to improve on their fin they were in the cellar last sea According to coach Wayne who is in first year coaching after playing foal wllh last season the team has a strong of returning players has signed centre Jim Sliernt who centred the Howe brothers for Houston in the World Hockey Billy Gray a forward has signed and Johnnie Win dcr a Is also returning Clyde is back in goal foi Orillia and Jack Smith of will for Jeff Allen a is In Rutledgc a estimation a pretty fair hockey player and Is a new player for Warren Howe also looks very good so far As well lias four of five local players trying out for the club some from Huntsville where lives I hope there is more local Interest In the league this year and that the teams have a few local players on their clubs said Rut edge Port in and Georgetown should all be strong teams Rutledge says Orillia needs wingers and Vitas Johnny and Bob Sheet will be counted on in that area Port Elgin Stmocos Port Elgin who won the North division title last sea son when they defeated Col in six games should be a strong contender again tills season despite the fact that they lost two early exhibition games by lopsided scores Col lingwood beat hem and Owen Sound won There Is a nucleus of 10 players returning from last year and manager Terry feels that Port Eg will be as strong as lost season says they are hoping to shore up their defence a weak point lost Port Elgin will go with the same three forward lines as last season Dean Simmons Bob McKinnon and Glen Mornings tar are one line Jack Howell Jim McKinnon and Murray Cobban form another and Bill Breton Claude and Doug Woods make up the third line has signed goalie John Bach who Is from the Durham Huskies Elgin will be missing the brothers Rick and Joe and Ted Scarf all good play era with the club last season While Rick is working in Thunder Boy Scarf moved to and Joe is work in Toronto But Is hope ful hat Scarf and Joe Enns will rejoin Port Elgin around Christmas Port has a new coach John from Kincardine who has several years of professional hockey nd him I really don know what the league will be like sold and arc unknown entries But I expect the competition to be light DON HARLOW STEVE PETER McDUFFE Collin Shipbuilders Coll in Shipbuilders had a cakewalk through the North division last year fin ishing in first spot over Port Elgin However lost to Port Elgin in the North division finals after sweeping by Orangevillc in the semi finals In four straight games But should be among the lop contenders in this year race A11 of their strong players arc returning such as Ron Patterson Steve Sly Ian and form Wayne Carlton McKegncyandTer ry Agncw on defence the opposition will have a hard lime reaching the Colling wood goal tender Were in the middle of training camp right now said coach Sly played with he team lost season but will limit his playing activity this season loo minimum We re still long way from where we want to be It hard to say what the league will be tike at this point but it should be very competitive and there should be more local interest with teams like and playing Collingwood has played one exhibition pome so far against Port Elgin which won getting even for the elimination last year by Port Elgin in the cm vis on finals I we re in for a good year because of the nature of the teams involved said Sly STEVE GARY LANDRY It been over five months since the Raiders hod to win a hockey game That was back In April of last season when the Intermediate A champs played Charlotte- town in the Eastern Cana Hardy Cup in Timmlns Friday night they must win against the Barrie Flyers if they hope to start their regular season sche dule with a win For coach Steve who played In that last must win game up north Fridays season and home opener will be a real test for all the Raiders I think they re pulling a sleeper said Bar to a former Senior A team before the league folded this year will be a formidable opponent for the Raiders Both are past league win In their own divisions and both hove gone on to piny in Canadian championship with Barric go ing all the way once winning the Alton Cup a game plan Friday will be to approaches the up coming season philosophical Obviously I have to be optimistic I hope by Christ mas we bo 5050 I m not going to be a good coach overnight With new players 1 have to find out players are like on them There number of unknowi tors that will Obviously we re the nucleus of a It sup to me what I Ihlnk we contender The Raiders exhibition schedule win here Preston Jesters by I in Preston The jf Friday they had Iiem here at ham Raider marksmen w Tonclh Chris Frank Gonial Fifteen players The defending champions would seem to have the lineup they carried last year A couple of Iheir Peter Sturgeon and Ron are at National Hockey League camps geon is with the Colorado Twiss is with the New York Rangers but even if those two don t come back he Raiders should be strong They have former NHL Peter McDufft back McDuffc was the class of the corps last term They also have Juri the leagues leading scorer back and leader older New York Islander Is also back Raiders They have one of the scoring leaders n national Hockey ry Mac Fay den Maple Leaf farmhaj Young Raider fans under the age of 12 can now belong to on official club McDonald the hamburger people in cooperation with the Raiders are now giving out memberships In the Junior Raiders
