service club In Georgetown that is wilting to take a tentative look at gelling Involved in some form of a track and field club in Georgetown Last Tuesday evening June Brian Barnes lhe head coach of the renowned Scarborough Optimists Track and Field Club and Boss the founder of the club were invited to address the Georgetown Optimists Club There arc quite a few Georgetown athletes as members of the Scarborough Optimist Track and Field Club and this plus the fact that Georgetown are excelling in track and field competition prompted the local Optimist Club to seek more information on lhe subject Unfortunately from this writers point of view Instead of information scaled down to the basic level that the Georgetown Optimists requested what got was a Ibcsis on the formation of a club that would have done wonders for a business administration class To digress somewhat the Georgetown Optimists had been aware of the success that heir Scarborough counterparts had had in getting involved in a track and field program Aside from thai there was another awareness that Georgetown youngsters were very much caught up In track and field successes Several weeks ago Mr McLaren a staunch ardent and extremely likeable proponent or track and field had approached the Georgetown Optimists with a request for funds to help defray costs of a Scarborough Optimist Track and Field Club Junket to Great Britain The plea was enhanced by the disclosure that fully 16 of the members of the Scarborough based club were and the local Optimists promised to discuss the matter The discussion led to the invitations being extended to Mr Barnes and Mr and the possibility of setting upsomckindof a youthorlcntcdclub on a small level in Georgetown The Optimists creed Insists that the needs of youth be catered to whenever possible and wherever possible and it was with this tenet in mind that the Georgetown club got Immersed in the track and field possibilities Mr Earle was invited to speak and prefaced his remarks by comment This is not going to be a speech but As it turned out the but held sway aver the short introduction and for the next hour Mr turned lecturer and followed the Scarborough club humble beginnings to the present Thepresent was according to Mr and that lhe Scarborough based club was ranked number one In Canada and enjoyed a highly respected International reputation The meat of Mr speech and speech it must be termed because obviously he has used it more than one centred on dollars and cents Figures such as MO and even were tossed around like so much chad and It became increasingly apparent that the Georgetown club members felt they were getting into something way over their heads The possibility of erecting a track facility was even brought up and this according to Mr Barnes is not really monumental difficulty as long as the ins and outs of the project were sufficiently explored With all due respect to both Mr and Mr Barnes for Ihey have done an extremely commendable Job in bringing track and field to prominence through their Scarborough based club they missed the mark by a country mile The Georgetown Optimists were nol or In fact even entertaining a track and fleldclubon the scale of the Scarborough Optimists Mr Earle In fact pointed out that In some cases the club raises subsidizes the Scarborough Optimist club all they wanted to do was provide an outlet in athletics for youth As one Georgetown member pointed out We were just thinking of something to get the kids Involved He went en to add although somewhat hesitantly I m sure If we discovered a youngster with promise wo would send him on to you Scarborough Optimists The end result of the meeting and according to some members It was the longest meeting that they had been forced to endure was that Ihe Georgetown Club provided 200 In funds for the Scarborough Club Great Britain trek reported elsewhere In The Herald and promised to discuss the matter at a future date A far as this writer is concerned the Scarborough Clubs people came on far too and In he colloquial I Ism of today blew it The Georgetown Optimists had a good Idea until damper was put on it but hopefully will discuss it further This writer a column several months ago on the possibility of establishing track and field club for all ages and it received tremendous response
