Number Get out and vote on June 9 Ontario 1977 provincial election is something less than a success in so far as excitement among the torate is concerned Voters have been given the party line by all party leaders for the past six weeks But their rhetoric has left many wondering what all the fuss is about National unity an issue that will have a large scale affect on the future direction of the province was touched upon very little aside from the revelation that all three party leaders are dedicated to the same purpose What been resolved is how each leader would go about fulfilling the unity mandate Things have been a little hotter as local issues surfaced as the key elements in the campaign in Halton Burlington From Jobs probably the most important to the concerns over the hydro corridor rigutof way schools and Site the candidates in Burlington faced an inspired electorate But the numbers of those actively getting involved and con cerned with local issues almost solely remained the of the pressure groups directly involved in almost each of the issues The question therefore becomes one of how to inspire people to ac tually get out and vote For to renege on your right to franchise is to deny any future voice in either support or criticism of the government to be elected tomorrow A story in the Globe and Mail Tuesday remarked that anyone has the right of accepting a ballot and then returning it unmarked While this makes a valid and probably straight forward comment on how a voter feels it is also a cop out that fails to provide the direction to our elected representatives for leader ship Tomorrow is election day All Ontanowillspeak It is up to each and everyone of us to ensure that that voice is heard It will not be heard or it will become confused if we do not exercise our right to vote On June 9 GET OUT AND VOTE FOR THE FUTURE OF ONTARIO May the best party win Election hasnt changed in past five weeks By Queen Park Bureau Of The Herald After nearly five weeks of campaigning position in this seem to have changed all that much from the way It shaped up at the start When the gate opened It appeared thnt the government would probably get back with a majority the NOP would once again be the official opposition and the Liberals would drop probably sharply The main uncertainly seemed to be the question of numbers Whether the govern would be border line or comfortable Whether the would be able to make substantial gains or remain where It was and perhaps drop some seats And whether the Liberals would be able to retain a good presence or would suffer critical losses LIBERALS HURT At Oils late date these remain the key questions The campaign has done little to clarify As we get close to the vote It still seems that the government will get its majority but there is no real sense of how big it might be The comes as well entrench but there still is uncertainly as to how It will finally end up can personally keep their veals one time it appeared that it might be reasonable to expect them to return with seats Now it looks as though they ill be able to congratulate themselves if they do this The most influential event to date has probably not been anything that the three pirtics have done but a poll that was published by the Toronto Star on May This poll which was taken in early stages of the showed that the government was holding steady at a strong per of the vote the had dramatically risen to an impressive per cent and the Liberals had sunk to per tent The figure for the Liberals was the key one The government per if it sunny watch out the Liberals will be big competition What do those byeiections really mean By STEWART MacLEOD Bureau Of The Herald In case you haven I noticed I been keeping fairly mum about those recent six federal I vc been hoping hat by postponing comment someone could explain to me what the results actually mean So haven a clue But I am no longer embarrassed to admit It because it seems most of our politicians don know either Before the campaigns began Prime Minister Trudeau said he would be a tort of mini referendum on national unity And as soon as the voting ended he said this the case after all It was he decided a heartening of Liberal economic policies Meanwhile Conservative Leader Joe entered Iho campaign by saying his head was on the block after losing all six he Bald the recriminations against him came from the news modi II seems his head slipped off the block But Clark leading qui bee MP Claude Wagner obviously wisnl so sun He felt Clark was responsible for the pirty poor showing In the province ve produced what they ve produced he said Apparently that means CI irk should get the blame Bl AMI- is some others are blaming Wagner and tends to confuse things But while Trudeau spent the campaign leirmg massive strips off Tories decided not ruffle his feathers Tlicy arc hoping In attract those people who voted for the Pirtl In Novem said a lending member of Palsy a 14yearold runaway Since lhat time Patsy mother along with several others have us why What makes youngster run away Why tjo they go what are they running from why can they It Is our belief that there are no easy answers no pat solutions As with most of life problems the reasons why are as varied as Ihe people in conflict For some It a question of not having necessary parental skills or life experience of not trying hard enough again for others It a question of Irving too hard Back in 1375 we wrote the following piece offer it to Palsy mom and all other moms and dads who the problem of The Runaway II not meant to be a pat answer for many of life problems are without immediate solutions It Is instead a question answered with more questions while searching for part of the answer Till- RUNAWAYS Down on the In a three room shack a mother gazes at the cracks She looks around In bleak despair how could she go and leave me here There five kids to feed and I all alone Now why the hell did that brat leave home She still a kid not fully grown thinks she can make it on her own And yet for a moment comes the fear will she be right will she make it out there Running from what just as hard us she can not woman yet never child again In a fancy house on the high side of town a father has car sent round What s with lhat kid can he understand can I be here lo hold his hand There places to go and people to sec portant for business Important for me And yet that look when he walked out the door a look that said never never no more falher reaches for his initialed case and coot that shows his social place And yet for a moment he feels the fear and wishes that his boy were near Not a child and not a man running from what just as hard as he can A mother sits with tear stained face dear God why did she leave our place What would make her leave when we love her so wehad we did all we could did was it just loo good Were we too strict too hard too soft what And she sits and stares at a closed light door And yet for a moment comes the ear what will happen lo that girl so dear Running from what just as hard as she can Not grown not child alone and so young In the world of man A grandma tidies up the floor she tells herself 1 could do no more Since his folks were killed I did my best he was bad from that the truth I guess Lying and stealing and putting folks down always going to the bad side of town And yet for a moment comes the fear why did he go why he here And the grandma wipes the tears away and stares Ihe dawn of another day Not a boy and not a man running from what just as hard as he can A father puts the football back and thinks of college and field and track Andlhinksof needle he found on the floor God why could we have done more Why why dear Lord with a tear stained face we loved him so what wrong with this race A world filled with filth that con somehow take withhote And yet for a moment comes the tear will he be found dead will to night we hear No longer a child and never a man running from life just as fast as he can And all the parents ask the reasons why Dldweglve too much or What makes some go while others stay Do they have to run lo find their way For life It holds so many fears for both young and old in years The world can be a frightening place and some must run to keep the pace There never is a right or wrong in why the very young leave home Some arc weak and some arc strong for some It s forever for others not long Some listen to a distant drum that only they can hear Some listen to an inner voice that fills their souls with fear And moms and das they sit and wait some in hope and some In And moms and dads all learn why If they make you lough they 11 make you cry Theyoung must place to stand to make their spot in a troubled land To find what they ore searching for To find nothing more This man predicted rightly as It turned strategy would fall Most of us in Quebec are federalists and in this campaign seems to be the only one fighting separatism Then he further confused me by asking opinion on why Premier William was fighting a provincial campaign against Lcvesque a resident white the federal Conservatives didn t appear to be making a big Issue of subject in Quebec By ihls time I had no opinions left I just wish I could straighten out this Clark Wagner fiasco I cant understand how both can be to blame when one worked like a Itger and like a finger But then I yet to understand the 1974 general election campaign when ran the Quebec operations only three Tories were elected In iho province and everyone blamed Robert Slant eld
