distance runners and Its yearly appeal is Increasing an alarming rate This over athletes toed Ihc starling line What Is the reason for this annual the distance I as many before me have often pondered on this and last spring I came a step closer to finding out I ran a marathon inunder3hours Boston entrant Since that time I have been training towards my Boston debut and on Monday April IS ran the famous course to cam let ion The Boston Marathon is held on the third Monday of April every year on Patriots Day local holiday and the of the stone ride of The rate actually starts in the town of to with light Jogging During the next two hours I also drank about a pink of water which I had brought from George town as a hedge against de hydration which can occur In latter stages of a marathon on hot day At 1 1 we made our way to the starting area and I Honed myself about feet back from what I thought is the starting line At 12 1 saw the starter raise his gun and fired We waited for hi solid wall of runners in front of us to move nothing happened After seconds we started to walk and after one minute started to jog It was almost two before I altnlnid a reasonable running speed and then as recurrence These leg cramps persisted over ihe remaining miles 1 miles to go I now could see the sign ahead and knew that I could finish the race this slow pace the crowd which was now so thick that only a four foot wide track was left or the runners lo pass through shouted Here comes the first woman Shocked that I might be beaten by a woman In final mile of the race I cast a glanct over my shoulder as that she was still a good deal out of sight and again attempted an in With i mile go I could hear Ihe roar of the crowd behind me getting closer as Gorman kept getting closer Again I looked behind And then finally It was there the Prudential Tower and the finish tine I had beaten Gorman by seconds After crossing the finish line we were ushered Into the Tow where blankets and cots were arranged for the runners After down for half an our of the hot sun I started to feel quite refreshed and went upstairs far the traditional meal of bee slew and coke and to listen to all the post race discussion Why do runners keep return to Boston The course the crowds the challenge and the prestige all play their part and this time next year I hopefully shall return to Boston better prepared and more full of running After all it can possibly bo hot three years in a row i with Tor a so before increasing my pace to try to pick off a few more The route and t miles was fairly flat and enormous The holiday combined with the warm weather had brought thousands of families out lo watch race and men worn en and children of all ages lined the streets offering all the encouragement they
