My parents can pay for France, but worlds is just too much. Chaves says hes asked a couple local businesses if he could stand outside their doors and collect donations, but that they turned him down. He also looked into com- pany sponsorships, to no avail. Its only four months until worlds in November, he says. At this point, I need fast money. I cant just risk doing fundrais- ing and stuff. Ive tried so many options this week I need the money as soon as possible. I have to pay for all this stuff in advance. Ahead of competitors his age If Chaves sounds unprepared to be com- peting on the world stage, its because he never imagined hed be in this position this year. At the start of the year, I wasnt thinking about worlds. I was thinking about nation- als, he says. Now that Ive made it this far, I could honestly go to worlds and maybe come back with a medal. Thats because, Chaves says, hes already doing tricks and flips that most competitors his age cant do. Its an advantage this year, but he fears other tumblers will have caught up with him by the time the next world championships are held in 2013. If I dont go to worlds, Id regret it my whole life. Id look back at this situation and be like, Why did I not go? he says. There will be one more worlds for me, in two years. That worlds wont be the same as this one. Right now, Im really young and really talented. When Im 18, there will be tons of other people and theyll all be com- peting the same thing as me. I dont think there would be a chance for anything really big. The stuff Ill be pulling (this year) is the stuff that can win me a medal. Friend was in similar situation Chaves has a friend in British Columbia who was in a similar situation recently. Short on funds for an international competi- tion, the friend appealed to the local newspa- per for help. A reader a former national- level diver who wasnt able to come up for the money to attend an international meet when she was younger was moved by the story and paid for all of Chaves friends costs to attend the competition. Chaves is hoping for a similar end to his story. Who says I can go to worlds when Im 18? he asks. Even if I make the senior team, if I have one injury, if something hap- pens This time is my time and I know I have to shine at this competition and show my best, because I dont really know what the future holds for me. MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER FILE PHOTO fFavourite club nets gol er an ace The 7-iron has always been Rob Andersons favourite club, but he likes it even more these days. Anderson recently used the club to record his first-ever hole in one, acing the 180-yard 10th hole at the Scottish Heights Golf Club and Lodge in Brockport, Pennsylvania. Teeing off from a cliff, the Oakville native watched his shot bounce 10 yards from the cup, then once more before going in the hole. It was like scoring a goal in the World Cup final, said Anderson, a soccer fanatic who estimates he plays golf approximately six times a year and generally scores between 100 and 110. Rob Anderson (right, pictured with his father, Rod) shows off the ball he used to ace the 10th hole at a course in Pennsylvania recently. A difficult season for the Oakville Longhorns came to an end last weekend with a 63-0 loss to the Toronto Titans in the first round of the Northern Football Conference playoffs. Oakville was limited to 58 yards of offence and turned the ball over three times in the loss. The Titans, meanwhile, racked up 305 passing yards and also gained 68 rushing yards on seven attempts. Former Longhorns quarterback Tom Denison had six touchdown passes for the Titans. Stafford Wilson had four tackles in a los- ing cause for Oakville, which finished the season with an 0-9 overall mark. h b d f dLong orns ounce in irst roun
