It was 10 years ago Aug. 8 that this column published an article about high investment fees. Understanding fees is impor- tant to your financial success. Investors are encouraged to understand what they pay because those fees reduce their investment returns. There are three problems with investment fees. First of all, investment fees are still often too high. Decades ago there was great value in buying and selling investments. It took consid- erable effort to implement a trade. Those days are long gone. fTechnology and economies o scale have reduced transaction costs. Has this cost reduction lowered your investment fees? Are your fees fair and are you getting good value for your money? In my article 10 years ago, I cited the management expense ratio (MER) of a mutual fund to be around 2.5 per cent. That was when the amount of money invested in mutu- al funds was around $426 billion and technology was less sophisticated. In 2011, the amount invested in mutual funds has increased by $240 billion (or 56 per cent), yet investors are still paying around the same fee percentage. fReasonable fees are justifiable i there is excellent investment advice and financial planning guidance. Paying a high fee to execute a simple transaction is not good value. This brings us to the second problem, which is that fees are often based on transactions. How would you feel if your doc- tors method of remuneration was based on the medication they pre- scribed and you purchased? Would that change the trust relationship you have with your doctor? How would you feel if there were different levels of commission paid to your doctor depending on which prescription they recommended?
