Andrew Smyth, 37, turned himself in to Hamilton police Saturday morning; just days after Halton police issued a warrant for his arrest. Smyth was transferred into the custody of Halton police Saturday afternoon and has since been charged with three counts theft over $5,000. Police said one charge of theft over $5,000 stems from an incident, which took place Tuesday, July 26 when a man entered the Birks Jewellery store at Oakville Place Mall and asked to see a specific grade of diamond. The clerk opened the display case to show the man a particular diamond ring at which point the man grabbed the ring, fled to a waiting vehicle and drove away. An unknown male was in the front passenger seat. Police said Smyth was also wanted in connec- tion with a similar jewellery theft in Burlington in which a $10,000 ring was stolen from a Charm Diamond Centre on Monday, July 25. He was also wanted in connection with a Hamilton theft, which took place just a few hours after the Burlington theft, in which a high-end Rolex was stolen. Police report that none of the jewellery stolen in these incidents has been recovered.
