Pitching keyed the Whitecaps victory as the team finished the tournament with the lowest earned-run average, aided by the catching duo of Chad Arthur and Andrew Molito. Lucas Montgomery, Nick Beaulieu and Ahn combined to toss a shutout in Oakvilles semifinal victory, an 8-0 blanking of the Whitecaps U11 squad. Beaulieu was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Also contributing to the 12U Whitecaps champi- onship were Daniel Nash, Neil Dickinson, Liam Maloney, Sean Balfour, Braedan de Bakker and Troy Sturgar. The team is coached by Steve Nash, Ben Montgomery and Chris Dunn. Q.E. Park grad Kyle Jones was the fastest Canadian at last weekends International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championship Series stop in London. The 26-year-old clocked a time of 1:52:10 to finish 19th overall. Teammate Simon Whitfield, 36, posted a time of 1:52:23 to take 23rd place in the 67-strong field. It was super fast out there, said Jones, who captured his first three ITU Continental Cup victories this year to go along with a 12th- place result at the World Championship Series last month for his best-ever finish. I was really happy with the swim, and it started raining a bit on the bike so I was pretty cautious. I need to work with my coach and find more on the first two kilometres of the run. Both Canadians came out of the water with the lead group after having great 1.5-kilometre swims in the Serpentine, located in the centre of Londons Hyde Park, before settling f into a large pack o riders for the 42.9-kilometre bike. With the 2012 Olympics just a year away, Whitfield and Jones have identified what they need to work on if they are to chal- lenge for a medal. It is simple, said Whitfield, a two-time Olympic medalist. We need to run faster. After earning provincial gold in the field lacrosse season earlier this year, the Oakville Hawks midget squad nearly matched that accomplishment at last weekends box lacrosse provincials. The Hawks victories came over Shelburne (3-2), Cambridge (8-1), Peterborough (5-2), Sarnia (5-0) and Midland (7-3). The Hawks finished the box season with a 24-4-1 overall record. This was a very special year for all the players. Many have played together for a few years and many were new to the rep system, but after the first week of practice they were all great friends, Hawks head coach Dwayne Clarke said.
