Oakville MP Terence Young announced, Tuesday, the Church Street post office may soon be vacated as Canada Post considers plans to consolidate its Church Street activi- ties with another Canada Post facility in Oakville. These plans, though they have not been finalized, but if carried out, would see the services of the Church Street Canada Post moving within one kilometer of their current location to a place where there would be more parking for customers. The address of this new facility was not provided, but if the Church Street building is emptied some post office box addresses may change. If the consolidation goes through it would be of great interest to the Town of Oakville, which has been eyeing the Church Street property for the past 20 years in hopes of purchasing the property and turning it into a tiered parking garage. An additional parking garage, Bird said, would help alleviate the parking shortage fac- ing downtown Oakville, particularly when major events are held there. When we built our first parking garage, the one at Reynolds, the plan was that once that was paid for we would start to pursue second parking garage, said Ward 3 Town and Regional Councillor Keith Bird. The first parking garage has been paid for, for at least 10 or 12 years. Now as a parking garage that (proposed site) is almost perfect. It is central to the downtown, one block removed, youve got access from three streets. Bird went on to say the Church Street post office has been underutilized for some time with only the first floor being used to sort commercial mail and maintain some post office boxes. He also said a proposal has previously been made to the post office, by the Town, which would see a parking structure created, but a 6,000 square foot post office maintained within the property. The number of parking spaces being kicked around for this project was around 400. That offer was made to the post office where we said, You can be our tenant or well be your tenant, but of course up until recent- ly the post office hasnt shown any indication to do anything, said Bird. Even if the post office does go through with its consolidate plan, Young said, its not certain the Town of Oakville will get the shot at the purchase. I was talking to them just last week and asking if they would give the Town of Oakville the first right of refusal on the property, but they do not have a legal facility to do that, gsaid Youn . The policy at Canada Post is that if and when they decide they no longer need a property they put it on the open market and sell it to the highest bidder. Young has been dealing with Canada Post regarding this issue for the past three years and said he also believes the facility should be converted into a parking structure, stat- ing it would be really good for downtown Oakville. My position was that if they (Canada Post) would give the Town the right of first refusal, they could still get the highest amount of money for this facility and the Town would have the option of buying it, said Young. Thats what Im hoping happens, but there are no guarantees. Canada Post is a crown corporation, which is arms length from parliament and so the only influence I have is moral suasion. Bird has said the Town would offer fair market value for the facility if it came up for sale. Canada Post is seeking resident opinion about its proposed departure from the Church Street facility.
