SUBMITTED SCREENSHOTS Animator aims to repeat as winner of Australian cartoon competition A year after winning nearly $20,000 through an international animation contest in Australia, Oakvilles Dave Thomas is going for more. The local animator, who has been in the animation industry for 20 years, is a semi- finalist in this years Sydney Opera House GRAPHIC Animation Competition. He won the contest last year, which net- ted him AUD $20,000 plus graphic software, with his short animation film, Seven Year Twitch. This year, hes in the semi-finals in a field of 10 competitors with his film Kissing Gramma. Online fan voting begins Monday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m, and runs for two days. The Halton Regional Police Service Pipes and Drums band is doing it once again. Returning for a second performance this month to the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate, the Pipes and Drums band will play a free outdoor concert on Saturday, July 30. Also returning, The Chisholm Dancers will also put on a show along with other special guest performers. The show, titled Echoes of Erchless, is being put on by the museum and the police band. Pipes and Drums will honour Canadas brave and courageous men and women in the Canadian Armed Forces who have stood up for freedom and the nations heritage. Erchless Estate was once the home of Oakvilles founding family and is currently home to Oakvilles museum. Colonel William Chisholm, an enterpris- ing merchant and shipbuilder, founded the town and port and built the estate overlook- ing his new harbor and the waters of Lake Ontario. The museum provides visitors a view of its grounds and gardens and tours of the buildings, which includes the Chisholm family home and the Customs House. Museum staff provide period room settings, recreating 1920's life and telling stories of Oakville. Members of the band are volunteers, which consists of both serving and retired police and peace offices, as well as civilians. The Pipes and Drums band was founded in 1987 and is currently directed by Pipe Major Allan M. Eaton. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Erchless Estate grounds. People are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets. The museum is located at 8 Navy St. For information, visit www.oakvillemuseum.ca.
