Last year, Darrell Atherley inspired a team of more than 80 of his closest friends and family to join him at the Oakville Terry Fox Run. Atherley had been diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2009, and following chemotherapy he had several surgeries to remove his bladder, prostate and after the can- cer metastasized to his spine, seven vertebrae were fused together. That didn't stop Atherley from coming out last September to cheer on the team he had inspired. Team Darrell was the most suc- cessful team the Oakville run has ever seen, raising over $16,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Just two months after the Terry Fox Run, cancer took Atherley's life. But even in passing, he contin- ued to inspire each of us to carry on Terry's dream by asking that donations be made to the Terry Fox Foundation. Lee Scott, founder of WoW Power Walking, met Atherley through the walking group. With the help of Darrell's family and business colleagues, she is organizing Team Darrell again for this year's Terry Fox Run. Everyone who met Darrell loved him, and it showed with the number of people who came out for Team Darrell last year. We orga- nized it with only one weeks notice, said Scott. This year will be very emotional remembering Darrell, but it will be empowering as we carry on in his name to raise money for cancer research. Terry Fox had a dream of a world without cancer. I believe that Terry and Darrell are looking down on us and smiling because they know we will carry on in their memory, said Pam Damoff, chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run.
