Please note that the expedition will be departing in April, 2010, and that the donated eyeglasses need to be organized and catalogued well in advance. So please do not hesitate and make your donation at Barkleys of Oakville Eyewear prior to March 13. You can contact Mike or Terry at (905) 825-8795 or e-mail barkleysofoakville@bellnet.ca. Mike and Terry, local opticians, Oakville residents and owners of Barkleys of Oakville Eyewear are regularly asked by their clients about what to do with their old yet still usable prescription eyeglasses. The response is that they are gladly accepted and distributed among several charitable organizations. Recently they were approached by Janet Batchelor, optometric assistant for Glen Abbeys Dr. Patricia Wheeler, to help collect used prescription eyewear for a project that she is involved with. She will be travelling to Central America as a part of the Rotary Club of Perths mobile eye care clinic in Guatemala. Who Will Receive Eyeglasses From the Mobile Eye Care Clinic? Janet, with her father David, two optometrists and a team of nurses and assistants will be traveling to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, to provide primary eye care for hundreds of Mayans. The team will also be screening for diabetes, hypertension, and complex eye conditions. The eyeglasses that you donate will be dispensed to the indigenous people who live in the remote villages in the surrounding mountains. These people live without modern day conveniences, education and foremost, medical attention. These volunteers will be bringing much needed care, coordinating with local health care professionals and liaising with the Quetzaltenango Rotary Club to set up future clinics. Your used eyeglasses will be a precious gift to those who need corrective eyewear. Where Can I Drop Off My Used Eyeglasses? You can drop off your soon to be recycled eyeglasses at Barkleys of Oakville Eyewear during regular business hours, located at Commercial Point Plaza at the intersection of Fourth Line and North Service Road West. Police said the man was driving a Hyundai Accent southbound on Trafalgar Road when he drove onto shoulder of the road, just north of Dundas Street and lost control of his car. The car then veered across the road into oncoming traffic where it was hit head-on by a northbound Toyota RAV 4. The 79-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The four occupants of the Toyota, a London family that included two children, aged three months and two years, were taken to hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. At this time, police do not know what made the man lose control of his car, but have ruled out alcohol and speed as contributing factors. The name of the deceased driver has not been released. Trafalgar Road, north of Dundas Street, was closed for approximately six hours because of the accident. The Halton Regional Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this collision and anyone who witnessed it should contact Detective McDougall at 905-825-4747, ext. 2381. Halton police are investigating a racially motivat- ed act of vandalism to an Oakville residence on Feb. 2. Sometime overnight vandals wrote several deroga- tory words in black marker, in large letters on the garage door of a Frontier Drive residence. Police report there have been no similar recent incidents of this type of malicious vandalism in this area. The reason for this crime has not been ascer- tained at this time. The Halton Regional Police Service is requesting the assistance of the public in identifying the culprits responsible for this hate-motivated vandalism.
