SCOUTING AROUND Scouts Have the Answer to Energy Tax Dilemma Page 12 HERALD THURSDAY APR by JOHN TOST Scouting In North Ha ton la trying to ready Itself for a sharp increase in membership and its all because of something thats recently received a great deal of news coverage Everyones been talking about the seven percent tax increase and how It could be a long cold winter if were all afraid to turn up the ther mostat As a result crash courses in advanced fire lighting are being given to Scouts around the area for those of you who have daughters and not sons never fear I hear that the Guides are learning to knit heavy sweaters and suits Once again it looks like Scouting to the rescue Maybe I shouldnt criticize because after all the govern ment says that the Increase Is for our own good and can do us no harm For some reason it reminds me of the car salesman taking a prospective customer to the side and saying remember friend if you want economy youre going to have to pay for It Speaking of Scouting ACTIVE GROUP I recently had the pleasure of receiving a copy of the 1st Ballinafad Cub Pack Newsletter This newsletter is compiled by Mamy Wlllsle who is their group publicity chairman This newsletter is read by all parents of Ballinafad Cubs and by the sound of things theyre a very active group Just last month the boys had a trip to the Science Centre Mrs said in her letter judging from the tired bodies and sore feet a grand time was had by all Since theres nothing greater than a cubs curiosity Id Imagine that was a very accurate statement However they must have had a speedy recovery because two weeks later the Blue Six went bowling We hearing more from the Ballinafad Bunch as time goes on because In the coming months theyre arranging a trip to Fantasy Islantf and a bazaar Theres one word to describe a group like the 1st Ballinafad SWEET TRIP Some of you may remember reading of the Georgetown B pack trip to Toronto to see the parliament buildings the stock exchange and other attractions Evidently city lire didnt appeal to everyone or at least thats what I thought after reading this report by Terry Colter which 1 have entitled Everything you wanted to know about maple syrup but were afraid to ask Last month the Georgetown B Pack visited the Mills Con serve lions Sugar Bush Ac the group were Terry Colter and assistants Davis and Malcolm MacLeod Helping with the driving were and Ken Jones On arrival the Cubs observed a grouse They were cautioned against frightening it but it was apparently quite tame aa it followed Ihem out to the parking lot Mills as most large sugar bushes do uses the new method of collecting sop by way of plastic tubing The boys could also see the older method of collecting sap using wooden spiles and buckets On exhibition were an old wooden barrel and sled on which it might have been hauled also varieties of yokes used for carrying the buckets A huge Iron cauldron was hung from a tripod and the Cubs had an opportunity of seeing the sap boiled in the older method They nil stood in line eagerly awaiting free samples of hot syrup In the sugar shack a more modern method of syrup making could be observed The sap Is fed into the evaporator which la a long pan with either a Hat or corrugated bottom There are baffles in the pan which are arranged so as to cause the boiling liquid to travel across the pan as well as lengthwise The syrup Is filtered and bottled or canned while it is hot On sale were bottles of syrup and cakes of maple sugar which tempted the boys to part with some of their pocket money After a leisurely lunch the Cubs indulged In a few active games to aid their digestion Then after a short rest and cold drinks the pack proceeded to explore the nature hike At least if future In stock exchange doesnt pay off they have something to fall back on DROPIN CAMP Venturers in North Hal ton District have been keeping busy Last month during holidays Georgetown Venturers held a Drop In camp
