Georgetown Herald A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Main Street South Georgetown Ontario WAITER C Publisher Page TOWN HERALD THURSDAY FEB EDITORIAL COMMENT Planning is Paramount inauguration of GO train service to Toronto puts an even heavier burden on Georgetown and Esquesing in planning the future of what is to be one municipality next year One has only to travel the GO train route in the south to realize the pattern which emerges As one approaches urban centres single family dwellings tend to become fewer town houses appear then apartments then high rises Despite our districts designation as a slow growth area the demand for housing for city commuters will sharply in crease The two present municipal councils must study the trend closely cooperate in their plan rung to ensure that this growth is orderly There are areas which are suited to town houses others into which high rise apartments fit and some which should be reserved for detached dwellings The growth can lead also to new shopping plazas and study of commercial areas is important bringing as they do questions of sewer and water facilities and traffic patterns Industrial growth can also be on the horizon The larger Georgetown and grow the more skills are available among inhabitants and the more inclined industries are to eye a location here Planning is a paramount function for Georgetown and Esquesing councils in their dying days The GO puts a heavy load on the shoulders of municipal coun Whos Fooling Who Looks like Mayor has put it over again for Montreal Despite threats by the federal government that it will not back the Olympics financially the plan to issue special stamps and coins for sale to Montreal at under par prices is an indirect subsidy Forecasts of the revenue to be derived from these sales and from a proposed lottery are optimistic to say the least and the end result us easy to forecast It will end like Expo Huge deficits for which the federal government in one way or another must pick up the tab An alternative promoted by Halton s federal M Terry 0 Connor among others would be to scatter some of the Olympics in other parts of Canada We already have facilities for some sports in other cities and there could be huge savings in construction costs for things which must be built in Montreal It boils down then to whether Canadian taxpayers are willing to pour millions of dollars into one city or whether benefits are going to be spread a bit to others Whatever happens we are daydreaming if we expect that Montreal will foot the bill as Mayor Drapeau insists What Went Wrong As parent of a yearold a news item in last week Herald was possibly sadder for us than for some readers It told the end of the story of a womans body found five months ago in this area Positive identification was made after months of painstaking searching that the young lady age was originally from British Columbia and came east via Saskatoon She had been shot in the head OCONNORS OTTAWA The in the House of Commons on the size structure and lirmi of reference of the Pood and Prices was noleable for a number of reasons other than m maiden speech con Although it seems to some to have dragged on interminably it was do riant most Members of Ihc House including Government that the committee be so stituted to give it the best chance of something worthwhile There have been public Do something and Slop the bickering Hut if the public analyses the long futile history of these lommitttes and Royal Commissions it will realize that to succeed where the others have failed we simply must it differently his time Charges were made by the Opposition Parlies that the Commission was a Govern menl stalling tactic designed to relieve some of the political heat on them over Inflation In turn the Government charged the Opposition Parties by suggesting so many amendments were simply flexing their new found parliamentary muscles in order to embarrass the Government However what ultimately resulted makes Ihc point I was stating In my column of two weeks that con census legislation forced by minority government parliaments can be quite satisfactory The Committee as finally constituted without the Senate better reflects the distribution of the Parties in House of Commons and with lime limits and more definite terms of Is much better equipped than If the very general Govern motion had passed as proposed Such would probably have been the result if we had had a majority government situation of the major irlics en something tcccptal to the finil draft of Ihp motion passed Ml three von and lost votis on the and sub If is termed obstruction at my hat tHHTll However a still We wondered what heartache she may have caused her parents what led her to wander what company she was keeping to end her young life in such a sordid way We thought back to the days when our youngsters were growing up The dreams we had for their future some worries along the way We wondered if her parents had those same dreams and what happened along the way to turn dreams into nightmares receiving mail and com ments urging our Party and the other Opposition Party to operate with the lovernmcnt and its programs Surely slblc use of parliamentary voting strength as was the case during this lengthy debate results in the best of worlds for the majority of political viewpoints
