IN THE MAIL BAD Extra Store Hours Offer Customer Much Less Than It Takes Away Main Street North Dear Mr Editor publicatioat newspaper would Indicate that the majority of merchants in town favour the opening their stores on Monday This would Increase their hours of doing business from fiftyone hours to sixty hours weekly To the best of our knowledge thcro has been no questionnaire and no vote on the question of whe ther or not the store owners fnvour an increase in store hours Nor has any outside op inions from government or similar sources been under discussion We have been making a few inquiries on the subject and tho way it fa hand led elsewhere In some European countries the store hours are set by federal law There exemp tions such as drug stores and gas pumps etc otherwise all stores in tho country observe the same closing times All stores to tho same ma nageable work week Over time Is by agreement at times such as Christmas for Instance All stores can trim their oner costs to a minimum This results in a country wide in the cost of retail and it tends to lower es generally Controlling store hours is obviously very impor tant so important that it is put under federal jurisdiction Wo visited the offices of the Retail Merchants Association of Canada and were granted an interview with the national general manager We discussed closing bylaws and wo were given for our study a copy of Bill of tho National Assem bly of Quebec This Bill covers tho store hours for the whole Again we realize that subject of store hours is very important so important that It is put under provincial law FOCUS ON ONE CRAZY CRUISE YO HO HO AND A BOTTLE OF RUBBING AlCOHOL Prime Minister influenced the trappings on this wacky entry in the Jaycees Craiy Boat Race The signs at left and right interview with the manager of the M A- you realise you have gathered a better under standing of tho subjects under discussion It was unnecessary for us to relate the events lead ing up to the present situation in our town He already knew them We gather that store hours regulated by the legislature is the only workable system if we are to maintain a manageable work week with all stores adhering to the some hours This will take time Meantime we have to use our individual good sense We present this point of view in explaining why our store must be closed on Monday The Job of any retailer is the same He must endorse a family of products present a good Hon of these products and of the best value he can This always has and always will form the best basis for healthy competition In contrast to this in a contest to see who can stay open tho longest hours the win is predetermined The ben of such a competition does not favour the consumer nor the small businessman It Is ob vious that small business man operating efficiently in customers interest is vital to the economy This Is why fed governments provincial governments end national org such as the M A are concerned with store hours It ho been our custom open our stores for fiftyone hours weekly About fifteen of these hours favour family shop ping when the average worker is free to shop To add another nine hours by opening Monday would offer the customer much less than it would take away Whether we consider our em ploy or ourselves we can not handle a sixty hour work week or a seventy hour work week for obvious reasons We will not intentionally add to the cost of our operation and ex the customer to pay for it In price increases It is just not what tho job calls for Earl Ryder Ryder TV Mclntyre Cres Dear Sir As a parent of a young hock player I am not pleased with the way this season has to end The original schedule called for games up to the end April It is nice to have tournaments in our town but this should be within reason and does not de prive most of the home boys and their teams of ice lime Now are boys are being push with games to finish by April 18 I don I feel this would happening if the Raiders were still in the playoffs but be cause they are not it appears moneywise the best course to break up the Ice despite de priving the youngsters I think next year it would be a good Idea to tako into consid ration the fact of tournaments why con they still leave Sat urday free and the possibility of Raiders not making it and then work out the boys Three Hundred Cree Need More Food And Clothing 2
