Parents must demand bike safety from children It s an old refrain but one which certainly bears playing again With the arrival of spring Acton s residential streets have become a nightmare for ivers Children are riding their bikes all over the place Riding with no hands two on a bike out from between parked cars crossing intersections without looking riding while wearing radio headphones weaving about etc are all common sights on our streets these days It is especially nerve wracking to drive in areas congested by children or near schools such asKinghamorActonBIvd And with summer vacations fast approaching the problem will at least double While it is incumbent on vers to exercise more caution remain alert and obey the speed limit children and par ents must also accept some responsibility Teachers police safety off and service clubs like the Optimists who just held a bike rodeo allhave their role in reminding children to ride safely and obey the rules of the road However parents also have a role probably the most crucial role to play in keeping our young people safe Again we urge all parents to not just mention bike safety to their children but to spot check the situation to make sure the message is getting through The next time your child takes his or her bike out for ride try to follow along afterwards and unobserved see that they are riding safely If you find he or she operating the bike safely the quickest way to solve the prob lem is a stern lecture accomp anied by a time in the garage for the bike The message will get across Don t assume others have done the job for you make sure yourself that your child is a careful cyclist Children are carefree not careless but parental guidance can go a long way toward curb ing carefree behavior and promoting careful operation of bikes In recent years we been very lucky here there hasn been a bikecar tragedy though the way some people speed on residential streets in this town and the antics of some kids on bikes like riding down the middle of the road wearing headphones its a wonder Let stop pressing our luck Our readers write Greenore residents want a park not more houses Ed lor Press Dear Their office has received many requests from students looking for all types of employment I recently risked my fas food generation reputation and decided to make a pie the second my lifetime It may also be the last curst Ihadtoborrowapieplate Then got out my semi fast food crust little bars followed directions to a T or so I thought Going by memory only of my mother making her crusts I spread flour out on a board and set to work With my water added it was then time to roll the crust into shape I plopped the lump of dough onto the board and flour and faced the crisis of no pin Not to be stymied by such minor inconveniences I used my good old Canadian know how and got out a pop bottle Ti e dough stuck to the glass flour flew all oyer the place and the shape looked somewhat like the outline of the various countries of Europe 1 tried to mould the dough Into a circle but soon enough realized it would not fit Into the pie plate anyway I checked the directions again it ftald to crumble the contents of stick into a had just plunked In Scrap that lump of mush I threw It out into a brand new garbage bag and started all over I crumbled that old stick until was of the consistency I wanted but it wasn t easy It was like playing with play doh something I hated when I was a kid But alas there seemed to be a big ference Putting my trusty bach I eventually got the dough big soon discovered not all the surface of the plate was covered I used by fingers to buttherewerestlllafew spots left undone What the heck Next came the pie filling I had planned for a pumpkin pie one of two that both Gord and I like Just before I opened the can I reread the directions It said I needed five ounces of milk A quick check In the fridge revealed there was no milk There I was with a pie nothing to put in It The can of raspberry filling was soon brought out and emptied Into the shell Thai part was easy Then I realized I needed a top crust Not wanting to go through all that crumbling again I reached Into gar bag there was nothing else in It and took out my first attempt at a crust With my hands I moulded It Into a circle and put Hon the filling got home just as I took it from the oven he had already eaten supper and feel like dessert thank you very much I let It slip about getting the top crust from the garbage and that it for super sensitive stomach He eat a bite Of course looks were everything he had probably prejudged it anyway sat there for a few days until I threw It out Naturally with my luck the raspberry filling had stained parts of the and I ended up buying my neighbor Jean a new plate I figure pie cost me about five bucks to make not Including the hydro for the oven and the hot water from me washing my hands every few minutes I hate dirty hands I have since bought homemade bake salesits the only way logo MEANDER1NG8 by Mabel The Tyranny Grass Once I read that a man believed that It hurt the grass when it was cut and there fore be would not cut his
