because this is the Year of the Handicap it was only fitting this year to aim this special week to those less fortunate The problem of disabled persona In fire emergencies has become more visible and our attention to their problems must be Increased by those responsible for pro viding fire safety Holmes said He noted neighbors should be made aware if thero is a handicapped person living nearby In this way disabled per sons can increase the likelihood of thelr reccivlng assistance in case of Holmes also pointed out construction features that provide access and egress from public buildings such as ramps could be built This would ensure that no matter where a handicapped person is they will always be able to make a rapid exit It also ensure the disabled of a fairly normal life 1 attending hockey games visiting the library etc Holmes also suggested install a Hon of features that encourage self protection He noted railings and signalling lights for the deaf are examples Staff owners and tenants of buildings should bo assigned specific responsibilities In case of emergencies such as Internal fire drills This too he said relates back to someone aware a handicapped person may bo trapped in a room or building The fire department is asking the support of all concerned people to provide a rational and flexible solution to a difficult fire safety problem the chief said Wo the fire
