Acton Free Press Wednesday Nov 1980 Strive for excellence valedictorian tells graduates Mark Saw den go dress Friday night Striving for excellence should be the goal of every graduate Vnledic Mark Sawden told a packed audience or parents relatives friends and graduates at Friday night s Acton High School commence exercises Nearly 150 students received their grade and 13 diplomas while dozens of students were honored with awards scholarships and bur The evening marked the return of two year principal Watkms to the school He was presented with a plaque by last year s student council president Mary Kcktc He hanked students and staff for the memories and privilege of being principal Sawden valedictory address was brilliant He managed to combine a roast of the and staff on tho school with some thought provoking remarks about the goals and objectives the should be striving to achieve Sawden himself was roasted by teacher Mrs J who introduced him Perhaps when we were at high school we didn see it as a serious place However now that wc have passed over to the other side of the fence we have an op portunity to see it dif ferently Sawden said The step from adolescence to the beginning of adulthood is a large one high school was like blanket providing us with security seemingly invulnerable to most things that could harm us We were told by our teachers what to do and how to do it We were rarely criticized or seriously chastized for our mistakes and we were too selfish to see that our day today actions within the social atmosphere of school was detrimental to those who werent cepted Being accepted was everything in high school The social groups that formed had a lot more power over their fellow school mates than we cared to consider As we were full of our selves we perhaps failed to see the effect of the world today on our parents and the stress and strain they feel to provide for us It was easy to say to ourselves that they did not pay as much attention to us as our egos required but we missed excellent valedictory ad the fact that their world was to become ours and all too soon For us its here now In high school wc may have been heroes or heroines to our fellow students because of vie tones in academic or sporting endeavours But in college or university you must prove yourself all over again without utly a like our You i selfdrive prevail teachers who take pains develop to igainst being submerged in an over whelming number of new things both educational and if you arc away what you have been used to going to Mother for during the last leyears The students going immediately into in dustry are confronted with the profit motive of business Companies will train us and pay us and ultimately expect a return on their in vestment That is their right and for most of us avenue to a full and rewarding life as each of us perceives it But what about the investment in our selves We have left high school now and have on the average approx lmalely years or so to retirement Within five years some of us may be married and have children Now I think would be a great lime to look at ourselves and ask If we invested our time welt in high school and If we did not what should do now before it s too late The world owes us nothing owe the world everything for the world of tomorrow belongs to us and will only be excellent if we seek to be excellent Tonight is the end of our childhood and for my part I am happy that most of it was spent In Acton The honor of being selected valedictorian will stay with me forever From today my first in adulthood I intend to seek out excellence by being as excellent as I can for I feel a strange need to justify the high hopes that my parents teachers and friends have forme to prove my value to the world as a member of the human race To my fellow graduates 1 urge you to do the same I cannot end this address any better than parodying the words of our past principal in hi- message In our year We must seize each day with the urgency it requires Wish not our lives away but within the tedium of assignments repetitions frustrations and too often anger each day with our youth our energy our wit and our strength to make a belter world for our selves and our as yet unborn children Mrs Betty Moore the school principal described graduation as a point of departure for the adding it was a recognition of their maturity Their years of study will culminate in the not too distant future in their biggest test yet job performance She urged the graduates choose the career trail which will take them furthest in life and not the trait that will take them the furthest In the fastest time Following is the Hat of award scholarship and busary winners The Sandra Patterson Robertson The Acton Home Hardware Bur
