New principal welcomes back students Tho Acton Press Wednesday Sept 7 Acton High School a new principal Betty Moore Is looking for ward to meeting nil her students today The appointment of Mrs Moore to Acton and the transfer of former principal Wally to Burlington took place after tho summer ays started Mrs Moore met most of the schools teachers last spring and during the summer These were the Informal meetings which Mrs Moore said she prefers Had the appointment been made the end of the old school year Mrs Moore Indicated she would have liked to have met the students A letter of greeting however has been mailed to the schools population Today the first students in the school the Grade heard Mrs Moores words of welcome over the public address system Mrs Moores efforts get to know the com have not and will not depend on people coming to her She has already toured the town During the first semester Mrs Moore said she will bo getting out more and around the school and into the community Links which have already been established between the school and the community appear to be secure will also be meeting the community In small groups That will start with the Grade parents Principals from the other town schools have already gotten together with their new comrade Usually there are such meetings which the principals use to keep themselves informed Acton is Mrs Moores first though she has ac cumulated five years of administrative as a viceprincipal in Oakville and Burling ton One of the regular practises of Acton High School principals has been the teaching of classes Mrs Moore wont be teaching on a consistent basis however she dicated a desire to take on classes in science or physical education her special ties from time to time Mrs Moore joined the In as a teacher of biology and physical education at OakvllleTrafalgar High Scliool Seven years later she was appointed thai schools vice- principal tion Mrs Moore has been a volunteer for various groups such as church groups and rate payers organizations Beyond the day today education work Actons newest is vice- chairman of the Hal ton and Niagara Principals Association She is also a member of a number of board committees Mrs Moore summed up her philosophy of education as carrying out the ministrys guidelines and the board programs and fulfill the needs of the community 1 think the school has news about the levels of heavy metals in Halton Region sewage system The bad news is that lead copper line mercury and cadmium arc above acceptable levely The good news is that the amounts arc being drastically reduced Public Works Director Bob Moore produced a report on heavy metals the system to his com and while metals are above levels in some cases he said he is positive in his approach to
