place in the Central Division championships In Sudbury He narrowly missed claiming the top spot in his first year in senior compel lion by a Be to margin lo veteran Kevin Hicks of Windsor That part pleased him However the 18year old student at Acton High School said he thai if he could have skated betlcr in the long pro gram he could have won it I was only a few points behind after the short program he said If I d skated my best I could have won hands down He described his short program as the best I could possibly do His performances entitle Parker lo advance lo the Canadian Jan 19 in Kilchencr However he Is some what concerned wilh the politics Involved wilh the which work against him This is just his first year in senior compared to the five years of Hicks You don t go to the meets worrying how to place he said This is my first time around in senior and all the judges have to see you before I Just do my hardest and see what happens The Canadian Championships set up a natural rivalry for Par Brian Orser who claimed the national junior cham pionship with a ocular final Parker added that beating Orser was on his mind although he fell Orser mlghl have Ihe edge in the judges minds before the finals because I of his victory year as well as his strong Europ- performances over the summer Parker had been Elated lo perform four triple jumps in Sudbury but made them into doubles while he was skating He also completed three double axles and a var lety of moves In contrast Hicks attempted triples and fell on two just one jump Kevin Parker was nudged from the top spot at bury last week Me heads to the nationals in Jan Gemini have bitter taste after dealing with Sabres over Malcolm by Robin Georgetown Gemini still have a bitter taste In their mouths about events that took place when they were trying to make a deal with Acton for the vices of Scott Malcolm Malcolm was playing with Georgetown until an Ontario Hockey Association reverted his playing rights back to Georgetown Gemini president Bob Girdwood hod a letter drafted when the final deal was made with the Sabres for Makolm services saw fit to mail his letter anyway The letter expresses what the Gemini fell happened in the deal Following the deal rdwood saw fit to odd to what he had said with a second letter regarding the circumstances Remember hen reading that the first letter from the Gcmint was written before the final deal was made for Malcolm playing rights November 1979 As president of he Georgetown Hockey Club I am protesting very strongly to the manner in which the executives of the Acton Sabres Hockey Club arc stalling In the negotiations for Scott Malcolm services since last Wednesday morning Chris Milne our manager and I have been phoning Acton at templing to find someone who was capable of a decision So far no luck On Wednesday evening we were face to face with their genera manager at a league meeting We were told that he manager had no authority in the matter but he would have someone contact us Thursday Nothing In fact nothing until Saturday noon when the A head office finally tired of this stall as well contacted their general manager I then had a phone call from the president He too claimed to have no authority in the matter It was a four man player acquisition committee that must be talked to and they would not make a decision unless they were all together At one point I was told one member of the com mlttee was in Texas and another in Florida In fact on the Saturday they were in Orangeville a minor hockey tournament Finally late Saturday when no trade could be relayed to thi OHA fortheweckendgames Actons president phoned a second lime He had been able to contact all members of the committee and they agreed wanted dollars cash period The sum is entirely unrealistic for Junior B level hockey and they know it We countered with a cash offer which we feel Is good for a quality Junior player It more in fact than tier A teams are offering for players in many cases That is where the matter stands You will notice lhat I deliberately wrote all Acton titles in small letters In my opinion executives are people who arc capable of and not afraid of making decisions Committees are places for the indecisive to hide and seldom dees any thing positive come from one We were given Scott Malcolm card by the OHA and we made player adjustments assuming that this talented hockey player would be a member of our team The OHA saw fit to correct their own error and lake Scott services from us Therefore we are penalized not just by the loss of Scott but by the changes that we made thinking that he would be a member of our team Scott is being penalized by not being able to play hockey at a time when bis talents should be show cased for scouts of A teams and college teams FnuiklyuswouldcostScottahockeyichoI arshipand the opportunity for continued education On the assumption that Acton like Georgetown operates their hockey club to provide advanced hockey for young men who are the players then I do not sec why It Is so impossible to makea decision December 2 1979 The previous teller dated November 1979 was released to the press too late to be published in the November edition On Friday November I received a phone call from our manager Chns Milne stating that he had reached an agreement with the Acton Sabres and we were to take a cheque to Acton Saturday December I and exchange it for Scott unconditional release for the rest of his Jun hockey Meamng that in each future year Scott waiver form would be signed to us with out further negotiations nor further compensation The dollars involved were based on that premise When we arrived in Acton with our cheque the waiver was for the season only and the Acton representative did not have the authority to change it Out of frustration and disgust we threw up our arms and accepted the waiver for the bal of the season That is where the matter stands Scott is playing for us and we are happy about that however the manner in which the whole episode was finalized leaves a very taste and a great deal of mis trust Yours truly Robert President The Acton Sabres don swallow what the Gemini seem to be saying and write this in response to the letters from Georgetown December As President of the Acton Sabres hockey club I would like to respond to letters received by Robin Inscoe from President of Georgetown Gem in is Mr Girdwood soys Acton is stalling untrue Georgetown was given the opportunity to come up with amount of dollars which In the beginning they t Scott Malcolm was requested by two other teams In the loop who could come up with the dollars Malcolm would not report The player acquisition gave Georgetown first chance OHA had contacted our general manager Sabres and after some explanations ruled in favor of the Sabres Club Secondly Yes two of the player acquisition committee were away in Texas and Florida and did not return until late Friday night They were at an game the following Saturday night Third The President did contact all members Georgetown feeling Acton was charging too much but not when you consider a player of Scott a ability could put Acton In the playoffs To get a player of Scott Malcolm s ability Acton would have to pay as much as he was for Georgetown Fourth As for Georgetown President writing all official titles in small letters we feel this to be very childish Hockey is run like a business no one person should make the decisions or you would find a very mismanaged organization Fifth OHA did correct their mistake and Georgetown is not being penalized they have Scott Malcolm Scott is not being penalized as far as scholarships are concerned Scholarships go to a if he is still going school and who has not quit lo go to work Sixth Chris Milne had made the phone call to president Bob Girdwood about the deal for Scott Malcolm waiver for Georgetown Yes a cheque was lo be brought Acton via Georgetown president who did not show up Bob Tost and came with a cheque Ihey knew what the agreement was a waiver for the balance of the season If Ihey did not feel this agreement was satisfactory Bob Tost did not have to sign Ihe cheque over to president This meeting wan warm and cordial far from the letters Bob Girdwood indicated If Mr Girdwood had shown up for the meeting maybe he would not have distaste for Acton only himself After meeting Bob Tost and Zeke McCandless we felt all bridges had been crossed Maybe Georgetown Gemini and their executive should get together and sort out their stories and not a one man team To run a good hockey club it takes cooperation executives and clubs As official spokesperson for Acton Sabres we feel these letters are on insult a collection of meaningless rhetoric half truths chronological inaccuracies We feel the Executive and management of the Sabres are not about to enter into any further bouts of verba karate via the press Georgetown Gemini or any other hockey organizations I would like lo invite any of our many loyal fans and supporters lo attend our next general meeting December 21 With regards President
