Ttio Acton Free Press Wednesday Aug 16 1978 Will you represent us Its time that some of you people out there consider running for office It wont be long until municipal election time Two area seats and one combined and area seat will be up for votes Who will repiesent Acton for the None of our three present councillors ill run foi the regional seat or so they say at this point This of course is a terrifically important one The person will represent our whole town both at region council and at Halton Hills council Its naturally very demanding Someone without experience would obviously have pi Its time for some serious thinking about the subject perhaps time for some persuasion With three councillors now rather than our former nine the choice ib critical Personal health program When polio as Ontario how of us knew when we were last immunized Obviously manv were not sure Doiolhy Craig the of nursing for the Health Unit each family keep its own health records When children receive at school a note goes home so the parent is aware Yet the health unit was flooded with calls from people who did not know when their were last immunized Now with so people requesting immunization all at once there is naturally not enough vaccine to go round The problem points the finger at the members of the general public who must look after their own prevention pi Once we are adults no one is going to phone and remind us it time for im munuation All too many of us have let these things lapse and the present aiarm will bring many of us up to date on our peisonal family health programs Babies then and now We happen lo belong to he gen era ion when people got married and Ihen had babies Inch makes ll hard to stand he present It seems thai waiting for marriage is passe but with all these birth methods and abortions wh are there so manv teen age pregnancies theie has been an increase in Hi of teen age mothers In 197 1 J Can adian teen ager had babies Six thousand of them became mothers between and years of age Of those per cent decided to keep heir child Of the abortions in 1977 approximately one third of the women were under years of age We re doing all sorls of things to help Ihe youngei mother homes for her to Slav bile w ai ting for her baby clothes for Hie baby gifts for herself welfare so she can support herself and baby plans for Dav Nurseries so she can go back to school Perhaps we should be think ing more of the effect of this bring up on the baby Few young teen are to assume such responsibilities Now the Vancouver school board plans to establish a nursery one of the high schools to help age mothers in school The Metropolitan Board of the school board and the ministry of human are woiking together to range to finance he project We definitely feel that these girls should have the oppoilumtv lo finish then Grade 12 said Dr chairman of the Metropolitan d of Health and a member of Ihe School Board We wonder how these girls can find the mental discipline to finish school when they the moral discipline to keep from getting pregnant Our laws change as the Police Force can not enforce them While we are too old now to change our ideas and ideals about pre marital sex it seems as a nation we have abandoned all moral restrictions therefore should we adopt a policy of giving supplies of the pill to each school student along with then text books and note books But there is an option for those 14 vear olds other than birth control or They could try behaving themselves The Dominion Operate as region It is to understand the frustration experienced by chairman Hie Morrow over the of regional council com to uniform water Morrow feels it is a moral obligation on to adopt uniform watei rates across the i but Hills council is in favor of their adoption He councillors for showing petty parochial preferences instead of considering Ihe good of the entire region Tvpical of objections to rates for water was that expressed by Milton regional councillor Jim Kerr who said they would mean moi loss of control of their own deslinv If it goes regional we get only three votes out of he notes a philosophy which wont help Milton Acton would benefit from he change Morrow lephed that if is ever to be a regional government and provide services then it is unfair to treat one area differently than another lies of course but we doubt all his entreaties will sway the vote the olher way unless the favored the big vole in the south The incident points out the failuie of regional government to change the philosophy of municipal representatives who fear they may he helping to pay someone else s wav without getting anything in leturn Morrow has a be angry He sees the situation from an eagle eye view and can visualize the million in grants the piovince provides slipping away because of petty regional Terences However the display of pettiness iNo points out that councillors in the south may pay lip service to the philosophy of regional government but are just as loath to put it into practice as councillors from the north when it suits them It is obvious Halton wants only partial regional government and councillois will keep on being parochial especially in an election year Of this and that The Chamber of Commerce bulletin board outside he town offices bears notices of long past Time fora change there Downtown streets are par ticularly neat
