The Acton Free Press Wednesday 1978 Editorial Page Kssntr Search for our past Housecleaning time will soon be here again May we make a pitch for historical items The Free Press in a constant search for Acton s history would like very much to have old pictures letters books or souvenirs of any kind that relate to our town Recently we have been given railway timetables and old medals Our search is neverending Those sexist seals We can easily make copies of any documents or pictures lent to us and return the original to the owner speedily It is of course our hope to have a museum here one day and a book of Acton s history published Meanwhile the search for material continues Please drop in or phone if you have anything of interest You can please all the people all the time Its an old saying but one with which the Easter Seal people will agree It seems that the design of the 1977 Easter Seal symbol of the annual nation wide appeal for physically handicapped children last year offended some militant feminists a few Angolphones and a number of people best described as thriftty The colourful Faster Seals portray handicapped children in a variety of fun activities baseball throwing a bone to a dog and play ing with a doll Some women users of Easter Seals complained that there were more boy Seals than girl Seals clear evidence of discrimination Others protested that the boy was playing with a dog while the girl was shown in a blatantly sexist role of playing with a doll A very few consumers returned their 1977 Easter Seals with the comment that they would not contribute to the campaign until the French text was removed Most negative comments however came from those who felt cheated because the Easter Seals were so large that they received only six on a sheet The last complaint was the easiest to deal with according to Ian Bain executive director of the Ontario Society for Crippled Children This year s sheets have individual Seals of a smaller size The French remains of course As for the criticism of sexism the Ontario Society says that the child in the wheelchair playing baseball could be a girl in unisex clothing in which case the girls have a slight edge in numbers over the boys in the 1978 Easter Seals The annual Easter Seal appeal which runs from March to April raises funds to provide a district nursing service summer camping program prosthetic and orthotic devices diagnostic clinics and other services for the handicapped children throughout Ontario A total of 234 service clubs Rotary Kiwanis Lions Kinsmen and others conduct the campaign locally and also provide direct personal interest in the children in their community In Acton it the Rotary Club The Ontario Society also con tributes more than a quarter million dollars a year to the On tano Crippled Children s Centre in Toronto makes capital grants for the construction of new treatment facilities and supports the Conn Smythe Research Foundation for Crippled Children Provincial objective for 1978 is 000 HAPPY EASTER EVERYBODY Put on your spring finest your bonnet and your white dress and go out to give em a show Go ahead We dare you Sugar and spice Holy day holiday It was obvious from the bags of garbage set out Monday for collection that many taxpayers forgot it wasn t a working day for everyone Government employees had Easter Monday as a holiday as well as Good Friday No school no town staff no postal delivery This holiday makes less sense than Remembrance Day People who wanted to remember attended the service of remembrance People who wish to observe Easter had a choice of many church vices none of them on Monday Factory and office workers were all on the job Monday as usual Yet hefty overtime was rolled in by any government employees who worked that day But we don suppose unions would give up holidays they have arranged to have in their contracts Holy day has become holiday Meanwhile the tax burden in creases and the bottom of the pot comes closer to the top One of my favorite Indoor sports la leafing through travel brochures and 1 been Indulging myself lately while a jaunt to Europe this I revel in the colorful descriptions of exotic and romantic places even though I know they are generally a lot of It Is common knowledge that Venice Blinks like an open sewer but I still want to have a gander at the Doge Palace and the Bridge of Sighs I am perfectly aware that being a tourist in Paris is like being an open safe in a houseful of burglars But that doesn t stop me from wanting to visit Notre Dame and have a dekko at the great bells where the Hunchback thereof swung so merrily m pretty sure that I won be having an audience with the Pope but I d still like to stand In the SisUne Chapel in Rome gawking at Michelangelo s magnificent ceilings with all the other tourists I d love to ride down the Rhine guzzling and looking at castles with one eye peeled in case we spotted Die Lorelei sitting on a rock in the middle of that polluted stream I delight in a real Hungarian goulash Bavarian Italian pasta or even an honest Swiss steak It would be great to drop in on old prison camp friends like Nils In Oslo Milan In Dubrovnik Jean Moral In Liege Belgium In Czechoslovakia Even though I know they would no longer be dashing young fighter pilots but potbellied burghers heading toward senior citizen ship In fact I could happily take off every summer and spend six weeks or more kicking around Great Britain and Europe looking up old acquaintances making new friends and devouring scenery and history There lire only two things that stop me from doing this One Is money The other Is my wife There no enough of the first item And it almost takes dynamite to get the second Item travelling Looking at prices I shaken fairly rigid by the way they have shot up in the fivcyearsslncewclastwentabroad Hotel prices in London have zoomed by per cent or more to make that city once a real bargain one of the more expensive places to visit Four example by taking advantage of a special discount connected with our tour wc are able to slay Tor one night at the Hotel for a mere Regular Double check return When you finish filling out your income tax return take a few min to double check it You could be saving yourself a long wait Refunds can be delayed when a taxpayer return is sent with in sufficient information arithmetic or other errors Last com puters at Revenue Canada Taxa caught and corrected over five million errors Can you believe if The most common error was in the completion of the Canada Pen Plan contributions and over payments Of the nearly one mil lion adjustments to returns in this area the majority resulted from taxpayers either neglecting to claim their CPP overpayment or failing to include their contribution as an eligible deduction This year s return has eliminated the need for taxpayers to make this calculation Instead computers Will do it automatically Almost adjustments were made to the deduction area of the return while another tax payers reported incomes that did not agree with information sup plied by employers on T4 and T4A information slips In 1977 approximately ten mil taxpayers received average refunds of compared to 36 the year before So there was something to smile about after all Of this and that A couple of business men from Port Perry were in Acton last week making enquiries about the forma tion of a Business Improvement Area like Acton They were surprised at how well the B I A was received here and at the way it is operating They re going back to Port Perry to tell about Acton success Port Perry has a recently renovated town hall The old building had been converted into a factory and now it restored to its original condition and appearance and its beautiful Congratulations to Jack Pern the new president of the Royal Winter Fair He has a farm near town The new book about Canada first detective Memoirs of a Great Canadian Detective is being transferred to the TV screen now This is the book that includes a chapter on the mystifying murder at Ballinafad recorded over several issues in our Years Ago column recently The Great Detective is already out as a pilot show but it isn t decided yet how many episodes there will be So we may hear more yet about the murder at Ballinafad 102 years ago by Bill Smiley SPRIMGV rate is Last we were over we stayed at a middleclass hotel with bed and breakfast for And while the Pen In is a new hotel and no doubt smart it Is far from being one of the great hotels of London At that rate of increase a double room at the Dorchester or the Savoy would now set one back about Probably the answer is simply London popularity Although many new hotels have been built in the last decade there Is still an enormous demand for rooms with hundreds of thousands of North Americans Europeans and Asians pouring in to the fabulous old town every summer mouths open wallets bulging s clicking Nor does it help that the pound has got back some stability while the Canadian dollar has sunk to Depression levels A colleague who was over there last summer suggested Take as much as you think you 11 need then double it They whack you a buck for a cup of fee When I was young and in my prime as they say the British pound was the soundest security in the world A pound was worth about five dollars Today the pound Is one of the least envied and most unstable units of currency In the western world Itusedtobeanevcningonthctown albeit not a wild one but a couple of drinks a show and something to eat Now its an averagesized tip after a meal Thats what happens when you win couple of wars and lose an empire But it the money that bothers me about making a trip It the Old Lady First of all she can pack so much stuff into a suitcase that it takes an adult male gorilla to lift the thing That s why I came home from our last trip with my arms stretched to down around my knees Second of all she Is somewhat of an insomniac Hot milk nightcap sleeping pills you name it and her system shrugs it off as you or I would a That at home Imagine what she s like when re on the move constantly sleeping in strange beds every night eating strange food getting excited at new sights and sounds and people She knocks off one or two hours a night and the rest of the time is an advanced case of somnambulism Why am I so selfish then you may well ask Why do I drag her off to foreign fields where who II be lucky if she sits down on the edge of a fountain and people don t think she s a statue Because she won tlctmcgoolono Many a time I ve offered Why don you Just stay home dear and have a nice quiet time around the house 1 send you a card every day and I II be back in only six weeks before you know it She trust me even when I tell her it s the ladles not the men who get pinched in Rome So that a why I m saving quarters in the cookie jar and refurbishing my oncefluent French German and Italian Arrive-
