Doug Pritchard airs his farewell views The Acton Press Wednesday Jan 4 1978 Hills Is a microcosm of Canada with Its mixture of two urban and one large rural area and faces the same problem of unity commented Doug in a farewell interview before leaving for his new post In January 3 He said a town such as Hills is unique with each town and all the hamlets having existed in their own right for more than a century before coming under one local government He said councils of Hills have not had an easy task but had done a relatively good job more by good luck than by design He said the town is In a good financial position and credited councils with maintaining that position He said the town needs a unifying agent of some kind and felt one centre for both cultural and recreational activities might be the bin ding force where people would go to socialize from all over Hills He said he realized the question of where to build it could be but pointed out there are residents of the rural areas who arc often ignored Municipal Building Tackling the controversial municipal complex chard said it is not a complex simply municipal offices He said one unifying move would be a central office for the whole town He said there should be one place where ratepayers can go for all municipal business and they should not be bandied about from pillar to post He emphasized it was also good business practice to centralize everything under one roof Leadership The former clerk claimed the mosaic quality of the town made good strong leadership more important than one cohesive town He said a strong sense of direction is needed and claimed statutes are just words without people of vision to implement them Legion news Norton Well Comrades the holiday season is over and it is lime to look ahead to but before we leave to history I would like to extend the thanks of all members and their guests to the com rades who worked so hard to make our holiday festivities such a success Special men tion is extended to Bill Weepy Taylor and his crew for the magnificent Job they did decorating the Branch We also offer special thanks to the crews that worked New Years Eve and contributed so much to our best New Years Eve party ever Darts Crlbbage and teams took the holidays off but will be back competing again next week The entertainment com mittee think everyone needs a rest so no special entertainment is scheduled for this weekend In either the loungoor the auditoriums On Friday 13 The will entertain in the lounge and the following bands are scheduled for the auditorium Jan Camilla Band Jan Country Dees and for Jan the Tones Dont forget your general meeting next Monday Jan Come on out and learn what has been done and what is planned Red Cross course An emergency services course for workers will be given Saturday February from to3pm at the Red Cross Cedarvale Office in Georgetown The course has been designed to prepare people for major and minor disasters As this miniclass is filling up with registrations anyone ted in taking a future course can call the Red Cross office 8776233 Tuesdays and Thursdays toward the type of com munity the people want He said the decision has to be made whether this will be mainly a dormitory town or whether jobs can be created here so people both work and live in the same area Cut Council Numbers Cutting the number of councillors from 13 to ft would serve the public just as well and could prove more ef ficient suggested He said one councillor to represent one ward on the local level Is enough and compared to the number of people represented by one member in the provincial and federal government and at the regional level He stressed there would still be one regional councillor from each ward He claimed a nine member council Is easier to handle and could accomplish more than a member one Government predicted regional government was here to stay in its present form with two tiers but In a long range forecast he saw a joining of Peel and Regions This was suggested nine years ago in the report as a barrier between the sprawl of Toronto and Hamilton He said as time goes on the region will turn more and more over to the local municipalities He said there muy be no regional road crew since the local works department will do the work and be reimbursed by the region Library The former clerk said he was distressed to see the town torn by the library issue He in his mind library Is the highest cultural achievement of a own and wondered if locn lion is important enough to split the town He said the service to the town should be the overriding factor He emphasized he was not saying Cedar ale is the proper location but stated the money has been approved for library purposes We have the from the debenture and have assigned from lot levies I feel the should not be FORMER HALTON Hills clerkadministrator Doug has resigned and will be city B C making the decision on specific details as location or additions as long as the money is used or library purposes Deficiencies criticized council for becoming too involved in the day to day administration of the town He elected officials are firstly legislators and must be in volvod to some degree in the process but are playing a little loo close to the chest and are not allowing far staff input as they should He said council should define more clearly the responsibilities and authority of staff He said there arc still some parochial leanings among council and suggested it r should never disappear en but it should not in I with the affairs of the entire town He said men of vision are needed to direction to others stressed that council must I act not simply react to the I pressures of resident groups I lie said he and his family I are enthusiastic about living initio west and the Okanogan I Valley is aweinspiring I Looking out the window he I added and the climate Is pretty good too J Kohari DT J Novak GEORGETOWN Guelph Street on 7 beside Post press coverage of the Royal just a brief note of appreciation for the strong support you have given us In parti we believe coverage of local partici pants Is very important and you have cer tainly achieved this goal Thank you again for your help look forward to working with you in the Royals show Yours sincerely Royal Agricultural Winter Fair CliveR TisdaleP Public Relations Director Easy metric conversion formula Metric conversion continues to confuse many people Such confusion when It involves reading maximum speed signs on Ihe highway accurately can be dangerous Several formulas for converting into miles for drivers who do not yet think metric have been suggested Most of them take too long to figure out when driving from one kilometre zone Into another Here however is one formula which is relatively simple and quick It might ThcSixRulc Suppose you are entering an kilometer zone Multiply the first digit eight by six This will give you Add two to reach the even Similarly If the sign reads kmh multiply the four by six to get Add one and you get in p Dear Sir In mid December I had the privilege of leading a Canadian delegation of MPs to Europe on the subject of litis worlds mounting population crisis Along with Japanese and American parliamentarians our purpose was to enlist further support for this work with our British ana German colleagues which we did successfully Sponsored by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities and encouraged by the Inter national Planned Parenthood Federation the concept is to extend the work of governments and other organizations In this crucial field only however at the request of receiving nations By the way Mr and Mrs George Cad bury of have been long standing and honored members of An exotic subject to be working on some might ask when we seem to have so many serious problems at home such as the economy and national unity It is true trut world population problems have not been receiving the headlines Ihey did in the Gos due to our own But all countries problems are Interrelated these days and the population timebomb one of the worlds most serious problems keeps ticking away whether we notice or not Canada and Its partners can be proud of their efforts dote but the greater test is yet lo come The worlds people hove recently increased from two to four billion and may swell even faster to seven billion In years and to twelve billion years Inter Closer home immigration pressures Increase on all western nations The level of illegal residents is too high in spite of our best efforts lo control It Our American neighbors have special worries for almost 10 per cent of the Mexican population now live In the USA without permission So our whole way of life is becoming increasingly affected by population In ternational development and all the worlds problems We are destined to hear more about it In the future For my own part I am very pleased to have received such recognition on behalf of As you know a great deal of my career experience has occurred In this increasingly important field of world population control with several years in Asia and several in birth control research My present position as an MP is then a good one from which to apply that experience In this way also I am determined to make the greatest contribution possible as your representative to help remedy one of the basic root causes for all our problems economic social political military whatever Be they in the developing nations with little resources and annual incomes of 25 to or in developed nations such as which are seen by the less fortunate as unbelievably wealthy powerful and trouble free And so especially in the spirit of this vl season let us try to remember not only he blessings our JudeoChrlstian teachings have brought us but also the close relation ships obligations we have with our fellow men and women everywhere Yours for a worshipful Christmas and a New Year of world
