B18The Acton Free Press Wed December 1976 Milton chooses Monday Campaign nears end for mayoralty candidates Workers close to the mayoralty candidates and the candidates themselves are optimistic but those involved in the campaign arent placing bets on the outcome of Mondays election for mayor Incumbent Mayor Anne and challenger Don Gordon have run two very different campaigns Mrs campaign is a high profile affair featuring Main St headquarters glossy brochures and Iwo professionally produced newspapers Mr Gordon on the other hand opted to run his campaign with heavy emphasis on door knocking and personal contact with he voters Bus in approach Gordons campaign has stressed a promise of solid businesslike administration from the beginning Speaking to people at J School last week Mr Gordon dwelled on that theme To know a town is to walk Its streets To know its people is to visit them in their homes I have knocked on close to doors now 1 have no headquarters no people running around with handbills I believe in face to face contact I believe in gelling information first hand Ill go to you When the day comes Im too busy to meet people it will be time move on People state Ihe town lacks leadership They dont leader that will quit in two years There has been no leadership in the downtown core Im not a quitter My term in office will be determined by you the voter Ill work to achieve good liaison with boards and commissions all year not Just or a few weeks before an election Good government to based on hard work for days of the year He said the mayor has no right of veto and must carry out the actions of council I have the strength and to do It Ive walked your streets visited your homes Ive done this because I care about you and your way of life he said Renew mandate In asking for a renewed mandate at that meeting Mrs said she had worked as a full time mayor for the past three years People of Millon are important to me I grew up here I have friends in this town and I have a slake in this town She congratulated for working well together and carrying out its duties for the town I am leadership I have proven it 1 have to promise it I have the courage of my convictions and I speak out loudly and clearly I have wide experience in dealing with people My previous experience will help you at the region She recalled people saying Milton would not survive but she said Milton would survive and the town would not go broke It was in on familiar ground that Mrs he hardest hitting and what is generally conceded as her best speech in four meet meetings Ive been a bit like a kitten Ive received a lot of criticism but Ive sat back and taken 11 But now I guess Ill be Anne of and take the gloves out and be Tiger of Ive been en tic lied for having headquarters in Milton It is there for the convenience of the people Ill not be there but youre welcome to slop in for a coffee It is not true that Im away from grass roots Ive been In Ward One on three recently and shall be out in all wards next week I have not gone away from you Im the same Anne MacArthur The mayor denied having said she would resign after this twoyear term She told crowd of about 100 that the transition would take five years In a recent news article she was quoted as saying she would not stand for reelection after this race My staff has been criticized for poor ration because it took a year and a naif lo stop train whistles from blowing Well Irains have been blowing whistles in lown for 100 years I think they did well People hove been told that I have forgotten the senior citizens Its not true She recalled meetings with the local senior club on locating a dropin centre in the old library The said that fell through when the senior were not interested but she said she was working on a proposal that could sec the old registry Field crowded in Ward 3 race office used as a senior citizen centre Industrial park Mrs MacArthur said she had shown leadership on the Industrial park She assured those in the audience that industry is needed and that no polluting industries would be permitted She criticized challenger Don Gordon for not debating the industrial amendment on the council floor Thats where you show leadership she said Im still your mayor Im still there to fight for you Go with me Gordon didnt react to any of the mayors statements but used his time to clarify his stand on the Campbellville fire hall I didnt vote against any projects up here I voted against the method For example the service station received an emergency phone call about a special meeting to discuss the purchase I went up see the budding It was locked and I couldnt get in but I felt there would be documentation at the meeting The agreement was read out There was no statement about what shape the building was in He said his training as an accountant had conditioned him to think that nothing moved until costs wore known He said there was no information concerning the structural condition of Iht piping or electricity Investment Mr Gordon said he felt he was being rushed into a decision without proper information Noting that the ran dose to he said the investment might soil be the best thing for the village I hope so During the question and answer period Doug Agnew asked why It was that Milton Council was writing to John Rhodes him for his support in a land severance when he himself had been denied a severance and he lives right next door to Ihe other case The mayor agreed that should have a separation granted but she could not interfere with the land division committee a quasi- Judicial body Hydro Ian Ferguson asked the mayoralty candidates when equal hydro billing would be introduced across the lown Mr Gordon said the Lamb Report and other reports dealing with hydro restructuring had yet to be dealt with He acknowledged he overlap but said he couldnt answer that question until he had seen the reports Mrs MacArthur said the region was waiting on reports out of Waterloo before moving on the subject but she said there could be grave problems for Milton if it had lo buy equity in other overlapping into Milton Costs would go into the millions she said At the meeting Mrs was asked why Ihe tow had purchased a new Snorkel fire truck when it had no place put No excuses She said plans were made put it in the old works garage but couldn I be m oda led there You can do overtoiling in three did well get the truck at 000 I make no excuses for that Questioned on the industrial developments Mr Gordon said he would reduce the proposal about acres from the 1 proposed Nominated candidates Town of Milton elections December 1976 MAYOR REGIONWARDS WARD 1 COUNCIL WARD one to bo elected oni to bo elected one to be elected 2 to he elected I to be elected Donald Carney and Newion are the challengers Tuesday Carney told an urban audience thai he felt his area had been short changed on representation heard candidates say that the town has been melded together with a man date that is three years old Hasnt happened He claimed that this happened and that doesnt feel a pari of Milton In Brookville Wednesday he said he had been cam patgmng for nine weeks He pledged that he would listen to complaints and resolve complaints if he could People are looking for a change They are looking for strong representation He said II will be manda tory for a councillor to be pre pared to dig in and with the people I can say that Ive had a better record attending council meetings since September than one of Ihe incumbents He was critical of what he termed councils inability lo make decisions Calls for secession A resident of Ihe area for years Elva Newton spoke of the steady decline of the deci making process at the local level of government She advocated secession from the region Within the Town of Milton particularly in the rural areas resentment and frustration arc growing We will not sit and silent under the dictates of and Burlington much longer We will not surrender our right lo plan our own future development to have our own Board of Education lo moke our decisions on the where and how of garbage disposal maintenance roads assessment and land use control BUI 151 which created the Regional Government of is not written in stone Our Prmeier did not go up the mountain and come down with it inscribed on tablets With legal Legislation it can be changed All lhal is required is the will and pur pose to change Missis has found that will and purpose why can we Too late Bui let me warn you If you sit still under regional government much longer you w ill have to bear Ihe crip pling financial burden of market value assessment and by then it will be too late The time to act is now I am heartily against the choice of Site F for a dump that Is not land use that is land abuse 1 would use the site of the Milton Brick yard and reopen the dump In Ihe north end of on a short term basis while we made plans to build our own recycling plant in the pro posed industrial park If It were located there we would obtain additional revenue lor the lown selling cheap steam power to the industries who come to Milton With regard lo quarries I would impost a levy on every ton of sand gravel or stone leaving the town The money lo be kept in Milton in a trust for rehabilitation when the quarry is closed 1 would issue new permits only when the existing quarries arc worked out to curtail the rapacious appetite of the aggregate industry Continued on Page 19 Christmas Downtown Georgetown Milton Mall On Dec 6 Vote GEORGE ROOT for Erin Twp
