investigation Into financial problems plaguing Sabres Georgetown Geminls and Georgetown Raiders The rate for the junior B hockey teams has now been reduced to an hour and the Figure Skaters rate has dropped from an hour to Norm Elliott speaking on behalf of six groups who use the Acton arena told council that the people disagree with recreation director Glen Gray who says people who use facilities like arenas should pay for it noting that libraries and schools used by everyone but every taxpayer helps the burden He suggested it should be the same for the rink Not free ride He said the groups asking for a free ride or unreal is cat low rates but they do need some financial considerations Mr Elliott said administration committee accept the groups proposals but he hoped council would Mr Elliott blamed regional government for the lack of direct dialogue between groups using the arena and other town facihles and elected officials and added the groups really haven t been able to give the town much input He said Acton Sabres be blamed for the lack of revenue the town received last year from their games since they were offered the option of a gate split or ice rental rales by the municipality report He said the Sabres agree fully to the ice rental rate of set out In a report adopted by the town in 1974 calling for gradually increasing ice rental rates over 1975 and 1976 said the hockey team quibble ith an hour but docs with an hour which was sprung on them just a few days before the season opened He said the shift tor the figure skaters from 7 hours last year of prime time and hours of prime time to one hour non prime and 13 hour prime time this year was placing a tremendous financial burden on the group He noted the group has faced two rate increases to Its parent bodies and has had to raise its own fees twice Increase Figure skating officials Carol Campbell and Laurie Cook noted after council reduced the rales since their prime lime hours weren cut back the group still faces a cost increase over last year of nearly Mr Elliott suggested Increases should be geared to of living increases the same as other government bodies calculate financial increases discussed their mutual problems Councillor Pat McKenzie wondered what the town will do if in trying to make the rinks pay their own way it forces teams like the Sabres to fold and leaves the empty He said that if the philosophy that groups using facilities must pay the freight is adopted for the rinks then it should cost SI to lake a book out of Ihe library and soccer teams should pay a fee each time they use the fields Councillor Les Duby said the folding of one hockey learn already a matter of great concern and that while the region Ottawa and Queen s Park very flex iblc he certainly hoped
