OUR READERS WRITE Only one model available The following addressed the the chairman of the Board of Education was filed with this newspaper for publica April 1976 Dear Mrs Alexander night Board of education meeting at Queen Elizabeth Park school the Board is to be commended for holding Its regular meeting outside Board building in Burlington inasmuch as more than half of the constituents served by the Board reside in the three com outside or Burlington it is most appropriate that Ihe Board hold its met in all parts of the region It brings the business of the schools to the people The Renaissance recommendation for a liered Board structure similar to that of the regional government was intended to achieve that result It would greatly over come the sense of alienation in the region if the Board could schedule oru meeting monthly outside Burlington rotating among the other three communities The cost of an adequate portable PA system would be a good investment too The staff also is to be commended for an excellent presentation of the values lion program However it is unbelievable that a program which is so controversial among educators and sociologists should be presented to the Board and public with out place in the presentation for in objective critique thereof We felt like we were it new ear showing there was much about the vehicle on which deserved praise the intolerable fact was that there were no alternatives in our society must buy the one and only model displayed whether we like it or not Surely the Board and Ministry must consider offering alternative models if it is to satis factorify serve a pluralistic society At the Renaissance sponsored show ing of Sexuality and Communication a year ago at the Queen Park School Renaissance allowed he twenty minutes at the beginning of the program to present their reasons for using the film hen I was asked o explain why on grounds parents were offended the film 1 was shouted down by a mob led by some of the same educators who arc pushing their values education our children Meyer noted that this program w is endorsed by an ecumenical body represent every major denomination in Ontario Dr Ken Davis of the University of Water loo chairman of the Evangelical Fellow ship of night s commission on He represents of a million people fror every major and many minor Protestant denominations In Ontario who reject this program Trustee suggested that all values in the past had been the unsatis factorv rote method with no explanation reasoning behind the rules of conduct thus taught Many of us were taught such traditional values by sensitive dedicated le ichers who nurtured in us the highest res for such ultimate human values Mr suggested that would be i belter world had this system of values education been followed in his school days Would lie go so fir is to lint we could two world wars ttiireb That precisely the position liken by Dr Meyer his associates in presenting his brand of lines There are many of us in the older generation who are proud of those whose viluts were such that lhc were willing to die in two world wars to pro our freedoms from such i lot lilt irnn is the v ilues education
