4 The Acton Free Press Wed January Tremendous Editorial Pagr Dont want to be freeloaders The time has come again to look at the way hospitals are financed following a letter from Guelph mayor Norm to Halton region requesting a financial contribution Hie letter points out 9 per cent of the total patient days at Guelph General and 0 per cent of the total patient days at St Joseph hospital are used by patients from Halton region No financial contribution has ever been made by Halton although Acton council has con sidered the problem years ago and realized Acton was not doing its share A recommendation to turn down the request was being considered until at the insistence of councillor Pat it was agreed no decision would be made until a report is prepared He had the support of Milton mayor Anne and councillor Jim Watson of With so many people from Nassagaweya and Acton using the Guelph hospitals surely it is only reasonable that some financial contribution should be made to assist with capital costs All seven Acton based doctors are on staff at Guelph and admit their patients there It is to be hoped that Halton councillors would agree to diverting the hospital share of the taxes of the north west to Guelph As for the matter of precedent and use of outof region hospitals by Halton residents which of these other hospitals could total 12 per cent of its patients from out of the county The figure is high enough to demand consideration Presently the region supports only hospitals within its danes All of them Burlington Oakville Milton and Georgetown are planning additions People from this area have been supporting all these hospitals through taxes for years with no hospital here Seldom did people from this area benefit as we have always been sent by our doctors to Guelph hospitals In view of the present govern ment cutbacks it s unlikely a hospital for Acton would even by considered We have traditionally used the facilities of fine city hospitals and would be unwilling to change There is also a more far reaching fact to consider Hun of people all over the province are using hospitals which are not within their regional boundaries As well many are transferred to the care of special at Hamilton or Toronto Perhaps it is unreasonable that regions and municipalities should contribute to hospitals at all Presently the grants are split three ways a third each from the federal government provincial government and the region Halton region is apparently one of the few regions which pays its full onethird without requiring communities to raise money for their own local hospitals Perhaps it is more sensible to have all this funding come from higher levels of government so this picky matter of boundaries may be forgotten Doctors and patients could use the hospital that suits them best However it would be impossible to wait until the basic grant structure is changed It is time that the or so of us in Acton northern Esquesing and Nassagaweya who use Guelph hospitals should pay our share We don want to be freeloaders Information on Adams First settlers in this part of the country were the members of the Adams family Their farms were located right where the town of Acton is now Historian John McDonald who writes a fascinating series of articles for the Free Press is seeking for any information available on the Adams family Can anyone help him Information on the district s past is pretty slim and the pages of the old newspapers provide about the best information available There are no diaries drawings family Bibles school books or deeds dating back to the Adams family as far as we know Anyone who is spending these short cold days rooting through old drawers or trunks in a pre spring spree is reminded The Free Press collects any old items relating to the early days of the district One caller this week is bringing over some old newspapers and we re grateful Of this and that The Liberal party has sent out to all newspapers the full text of Prime Minister Trudeau s year end review speech which caused such controversy Now doesn that spoil all the fun Much more enjoyable to make judgments and complain without having to bother with facts While experts tell us we should stop feeding the ducks on Fairy Lake others tell us to be sure to keep on feeding the birds who light in our gardens Discouraged ducks on the lake would hopefully fly away as nature intended but the small birds who dine out at bird feeders must have help to survive There have been comments there are fewer birds in town this winter One person who feeds birds every year wonders if we are already feeling the effects of sub divisions encroaching on swamp land Appreciation of Monarchy A newspaper in the heart of southern Ontario probably shouldnt let a small item of news out of Ottawa go without passing The Prime Ministers office has decided to have the Governor- General take over from the Queen the official duty of approving ambassadors and high com missioners The decision was made com pletely without the parliaments involvement Another part of our history and heritage has been destroyed Many of us appreciate the relationships between our country and the mother country along with its time honored symbol of authority the Queen Our monarch is not a burden but a living figurehead who attempts to personify all of our history and our principles while obviously living as a person in her own right We dont want to lose our official ties to royalty few as they are and minor as they are A Maple Leaf can never take the place of a Queen The monarchy is an old treasure that we keep and cherish Prime Ministers office please note Bert Hintons eight year stint with Sheridan over A charter member of the board of governors of Sheridan College and Its immediate past chairman Bert of Acton concluded his eight year stmt on the board at the end of January During the years he has witnessed fantastic growth that Tills him with pride in Sheridan First there was the con to provide alternate post secondary education in Ontario in 1965 Sheridan began its formal operations in September of 1J67 on two with an enrolment of under 400 students Now there arc eight campuses and last year the total enrolment was students full time and part time or night students Sheridan an operating budget of million innually The newest at has seven and half million to its current building phase Grateful Bert Is sorry to these exciting challenges behind but explains he grateful for the opportunity have been so closely involved for the past eight and to have tome in close with Romany mi people In an interview last week in his store in Acton he ex pressed his personal ills action and pride in both the board of governors hi He has served two four ear maintain ind repair appliances for in stance com in He feels it very important for tht Sheridan board to Insist on accepting their responshility for the advisory committees rather than leaving It up to The committees com pristd of knowledgeable people in the district are set up to confer on particular courses of study they are not pud they don meet regu larly and some members AFTER EIGHT YEARS of constant involvement in the setting up and growth of Sheridan College Bert Hinton is now off the board and looks back on its accomplishments He was interviewed in his Acton department store seldom attend meetings he said These committees make recommendations on the particular course they are associated with and Mr Hinton felt the board of governors must insist on seeing these reports He is happy to leave behind him policy which will ensure the board appoints those advisory board members and receives their reports The change In guide lines was made last fail He considers these com fairly effective By lawn Another milestone he looks back on is the standardized set of by laws which he pressed for They were finalized last year He feels this amended ver Is more effective The board now has just two committees operations and administration He mentions his efforts to gel the business of the college out of com mittees of the whole and into meetings open to the public and press The most important thing of all to be concerned about should be the budgets Bert Ana he thinks they should be presented in a way that can be easily under stood by the public so they may constructively criticize them He is happy to see an accountant Graeme of Georgetown on the board Cot job Sheridan wants its accepted so presses for high standards he pointed out He added with pride that unlike some technical courses Sheridan demands an input in and mass media to broaden he student per It a matter of record that per cent of our get jobs in their chosen fields he said proudly A terrific amount of is attributed by Mr to the Sheridan ad mmislrators lit still insists that the board of governors take its share of responsibility for decisions Bert has always been bustling busy in He has been Acton fast know put ting phrases together repelling every thing he hears most of what you say hut not yet ready to carry on a conversation Two phrases however he has down pat The first is Comeon m a peremptory lone and by firm grasp of chubby fist my index finger This comes immtdiatly after I have settled down with my piper and beer and lighted a cigarette meins hi wants assistance In building or getting his glass of doocc anything from milk to orange ky cat in for another of torture What it really means ofcose is tint he has a distinct aversion Grandad retiring from the action The phrase delltred in a piteous tone is Help me accompanied by a forlorn look and a tug at portion or my anatomy available This means he wants me to plug In the tree or hold him up so he can watch the recetd twirling on the turntable or reach hi can and wants break Why don t the Conservatlies their leadership race Just that Put the entire IB or or whatever of on a iruk it the Olympics send them off ind politics I was sorry to ste Dave lose in He lias one of those qualities so carefully hidden by most politicians sense of humor Maybe he went loo far too fost but he added a loi of the national political scene And speaking of the Olympics learn without horror and sadly without prist that tin government has diverted some million dollars from the James Bay project to ball out the Olympics How docs that grab you And that only drop in the big bucket with the bilker hole In thi bottom Something that rather shook me was the hatred of teachers that emerged when Toronto high school teachers went on strike I don think the word is too strong At a time when doctors were noisily demanding more money teachers were virulently violently and viciously of being unprofessional in going on strike The strike was perfectly legal yet the teachers were called every thing but child molesters Letters to the editor ran about per tent against teachers Columnists and editorial writers made no attempt to be objective used warped figures arrant sentimentality personal vindictiveness appeals to the emotions to turn the public against teachers Strange I can understand some of it as pure resentment I pity the mother whose entire life is disrupted by a couple of hulking teenagers hanging around the house when they should be in school I feel for the students heading for higher education who lost a couple of months And for the working parents who have to go out and leave the house at the mercy of that 16yearold lump lying in bed But I can t quite understand the sheer naked hatred that emerged I went through school then and dan t now hate any of my teachers I feel sorry for some of them Wo could make Miss our French teacher cry at the drop of a Poor Wheatly with a Ph in science keep order But I admired some of them like Old with whom I still catc and who has challenged me to a ski crosscountry race And I almost loved some Old Mary Walker who used to strap me three times a week Laura Walker my teacher gentle kind bright Katie Johnston who Instilled in me a love of literature Not a sadist or a bully or a sneak amonfc the lot of them Strange that hatred The Free Press Back Issues 20 years
