The story was headed hornier War rs Hold Reunion It slated more than Ml former prisoner of from Britain United Slates and Canada gathered Moose Jaw recentlv for a reunion The rest of tin was liltk nauseating union was held in in atmosphere not unlike the prison camps they survived wartime Then was barbed wire a bazooka two machine- guns a German flag people dressed up in German uniforms and caricatures of war time German officers I gave reaction to friend A bunch of middle aged boys clinging to the rial thing that happened to them That sounds harsh at first glance if it possible lo something and hear it Hut it satisfied friend Its incredibk said I too would like to set of mv old friends from prison camp but to talk nut to games I igreed I would like see some of mv old friends from prison camp for about half an hour Not for a threeday reunior with wives tagging along And perhaps this is I don I attend the annual reunion of former prisonersof war though 1 am invited every vear I guess m not the onlv There were at this reunion from three countries Whin arc all the others Then were 10 in the camp 1 w is in oik of couple of other items emerged from the news Guess where the chaps were entertained In the officers mess at Moose it was the first reunion of in to be Toronto does this suggest To me a little clique of Torontobased who kept the Hung going for who know what farms as were other ranks I know of no Cinadian officer w ho starved to death though grub slim in Ibc Inst few months Perhaps one in was beaten up for some misdemeanor 1 was of them it was own fault It was no bed of roses and I don minimize the skill and daring of those who tried to escape but looking back it was all juvenile and Hoy lookouts secret passwords disguises cavmRin tunnels interminable planning and end results about is dramatic as one degree There was suffering of course but it was not beatings and torture starvation OUR READERS WRITE Time for Acton fair again Calling and hard work of many iple and you will not for Canadians It was not but far as nulitarv discipline went most of the bodies had far more freedom than had had on their units But there was the simple fact that you were in jail and would shoot if you tried out quite the opposite to modem jails there was the ircat feeling of waste that the best years of life were going down the drain while other young men were kissing girls and drinking beer and mg up all night and doing ill the other foolish things voting men do There w is boredom and monotony stagmlion and frustration and a little lurking fear that ihe latrine rumors might be true- Hitler had ordered the to eliminate all when faced ultimate defeat But there were compensations There tremendous sense of oneness against the enemy There was the fascinating meeting of rent ide is and cultures a great almost education in itself Throw into one room the following a actor from the London stage a kid from a prairie firm i Ghseow loughie a Dublin hooligan an Auslrihan sheep farmer Welsh poet a Rhode sum school lw Norwegian railworktr a bare simple Toss in an American from California and West Indnn singing and a Belgian bookmaker anil a Polish i few other odds and sods you had a tvpnal group at least in imp I wonder where they all are Most of them certainly a long way from Moose Jaw small group from Toronto whose members can to fly to a convention and try to recaptun something th it is gone forever the same have stopped going to reunions of old fighter pilots 1 went to a couple But there to exaggeration ind downright lying about long gone days These pot bellied wife ridden right leaning class conscious middle aged poops are my old comrades No way memories of prison camp and fighter piloting are far more fun than meeting some
