The Acton Free Press Wed July 16 Uniform store hours looked into for town Store owners rest assured You can still sell coal on Sun day at least until Finance and Personnel committee changes the bylaw At the present time Georgetown has a bylaw re striding certain kinds of stores from staying open past nine and on Sundays Acton and have no such law and store owners make their own hours Com mlttee members would like to sec one uniform by law governing at least the urban areas Milk and drugstores auto motive centres coal and turn stores restaurants etc are allowed the extra open hours The question of crimination was brought up however when members pointed out to each other that milk and drug stores no long sell Just the one Item These type of stores sell everything Including toys Large department stores have drug stores and live centres within the store yet must close because of the law It was suggested that the new bylaw to be drawn up specify exactly what a milk store is and what a drug store Is The possibility of the rural stores being excluded from this bylaw Is being looked Into by Doug chard clerk administrator as some people must drive several miles to the nearest town The Speyslde store Is prime example of this If that store is closed people would have to go to Acton for milk which in some cases Is ten miles away When the suggestion came to throw the thing wide open and let merchants set their own hours of business Ernie a merchant himself said store owners want a by law They do not want a pre war situation of staying open until midnight trying to com pete with each other To alleviate the problem of long distance driving for out people It was Bug that the restrictive store hours be made cable only to urban areas If we did that Harry Levy said Jokingly ell the stores would move out in the rural area and then we would have a problem with planning Legal advice is going to be sought as to whether the by law can In fact apply to only part of the town Maybe we would be wise to wait until we have a full committee before we make a definite decision on the by law Russ Miller suggested It Is nice to know you can get a pall of coal on a cola night Mr Miller said refer ring to the coal stores Another question brought forth was the idea of serving customers in the store after closing lime Mr told the committee that no one may enter the store after ninepm but as long as they arc in the building they must be served Mr Levy pointed out that this was a way you would be able to shop on Sunday If you go In the store on Satur day and stay until Sunday you can be served he laughingly remarked Seek room A former Acton couple have written to the Chamber of Commerce asking for help In locating a room for them when they come to visit Acton for a week
