Linda Skoropad Home ec head likes AH country living By Corie Maxwell Mrs Linda who la the head of the Home Economics Dept of Acton High has been teaching for eleven years She graduated from Mac- Donald Institute tn but cant really say her aim In life was to be a teacher She has always been interested In Home Economics and she mentioned that her big interest in life Is creative crafts Besides teaching Home Mrs has taught science English and la qualified as a guidance counsellor Her hobbles are weaving and handicrafts of various kinds She is also Interested in a number of types of creative needlework She says that she is not overly attracted to traditional techniques though Mrs Skoropad now lives on a farm but was bom In Leamington She has two brothers who arc both in business In Toronto Enjoys country Mrs Skoropad says that everyone has a philosophy of life but that It cant always be summarized in one statement She Is interested in naturalism She said maybe thats one reason she lives In the country she likes animals trees plants etc She says that she is not a nature trail hiker type but deals with naturalism as a whole concept in design and this Is something she applies to her work She likes pottery wood leather fur skins natural colors browns golds russets greens everything which is natural She says that Is one facet her philosophy Need resources Mrs feels that Acton High needs more resources She says As an outsider coming into this school I am really Impressed with what the staff and the administration and the students have done with such limited resources that they have here She has so many different types of schools with fantastic assets and she feels that they are valuable She is amazed at the accomp lishments of the students and staff under these circumstances She is very impressed with what the high school is doing educationally She calls this extra human effort Onetoone best Mrs thinks the semester system Is a good thing because It allows more flexibility of timetabling and therefore a school can provide in limited set up more subjects for more students She finds though that the classes are large and It is hard to give Individual student Instruction when the student needs it Mrs also feels that the best education on In a onetoone basis and this Is quite often not possible When asked about the school dress Mrs said that the students dress well and most of them arc clean neat and tidy She thinks blue Jeans can look Interesting and likes wearing them herself but not necessarily to school She thinks however that girls can look much more attractive in skirts Since coming to A Mrs has noticed that the high school is really the community centre that Is not only students use It but It is also used for adults clubs night school election campaigns etc She feels that some adult members of the community should contribute to the school to help Increase its facilities since It is used by the whole community With all her sponsored by County Fire Prevention Bureau Anne Marie of St Vincents School and Dennis Game of St Anns School In Oakville were chosen top boy and girl in the county- wide contest for grade five students Honorable mention prizes went to Michel Jones and Shelly both of Holy Cross School in Georgetown and John Cairns and Lucy Cifoni both of Holy Rosary School In Milton This year only separate schools In participated In the Bureaus contest firefighters were Invited to conduct a poster activity program in the countys public schools but the posters were not entered In the competition Honor at banquet Anne Marie and Dennis and the four honorable mention prize winners will be honored by the Bureau at a dinner in Milton Fire Hall on Tuesday Nov 30 All will Guest speakers Under the apt leadership of Mrs Sharon Johnston and Mrs Betty Phillips thirteen girls met at No school for the past seven Saturday mornings These people called themselves the Lazy Loungers They have been studying Carol Thompson held the presidential office with Nancy Millson as vicepresident and Evelyn Cason holding the secretarial seat This the clubs topic was Being WellDressctl and Weil- Groomed Gueit speakers During two of the meetings the Loungers had guest speakers Mr Vern Dubs of Cleaners In spoke on Caring for our Clothes the latest in materials and helpful hints for dry cleaning Mrs Betty Elliott of Fashion TwoTwenty from Acton spoke and demonstrated skin care ana the proper use of makeup To complete this club the girls were required to sew a gown These creations will be fashioned during the clubs presentation of the skit Making the Most of Our Clothes at Achievement Day November at Centennial CVI in By Anne Dales receive a certificate of merit and the top two poster artists will also receive engraved desk pen sets plus a trophy their school will retain for one year Banquet speaker will be James L Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs Hamilton Fire Association of Fire Chiefs early in the new year Parentteacher interviews held By Susan Patrick The halls of the were quiet on the afternoon of November Soon the parents would be here to talk to the teachers Yes this was the day that every student dreaded in case the teacher said some bad things The parents started at 3 to keep appointments that were at pm Each parent was given sheet with the teachers names they wished to see and each designated time at winch to see them The appointments were minutes long Each teacher had a secretary outside the door who directed people to rooms and tuned the interviews After the to appointments were over the teachers had a two hour break until the next parents arrived for their appointments which were to pm There was some confusion In the halls but the hostesses took people to the right rooms in a matter of a few minutes Mrs Skoropad home economics teacher and her girls supplied coffee and cookies for the parents The parents received these at the cafeteria Most teachers lists were filled and some telephone calls were made before parents night by those who couldnt make it or the teachers who were too filled up to take them There was a supervision of Bruce Andrews Ed Dept Head at Acton High the grade and girls were taught the basic funda mentals of lacrosse As stated by Mr Andrews My intention was not to make lacrosse players out of the girls but rather to give them appreciation of Die skills involved In playing lacrosse The girls learned how to handle a lacrosse stick and throw the ball He was quite pleased with the results after only a week of learning Here are some opinions from a few students who partook lacrosse Opinion pull Beryl Ive learned a new sport I didnt know too much about before I though that Mr Andrews was very patient with the girls M argot Matheson It was a lot of fun We should have played it longer we were Just beginning to understand and enjoy It Virginia Its alright Its too rough for girls After lacrosse for a week orientation which Is the use of the compass was suggested but factors such as bad weather and inefficient equipment prevented it Guidance head attends conference Carle Maxwell Counselling for stud en tit Is becoming more difficult all time due to the accelerated rate of change and the guidance staff of quickly realizing this problem To aid him In his work Brian Skerrclt Head of Guidance went to a three day conference last week in Sudbury The School Counsellors Association was holding Its annual meeting over delegates from Ontario and northern United States in attendance The aim of is to act hi a voice of guidance personnel in matters such as training The specific theme for tills convention was career development and planning Takes tours Some of Mr time In Sudbury was spent on a tour of the nickel mines and of the station in North Bay The purpose of this was to give the counsellors better knowledge of the working world Saturday the counsellors were allowed to attend two workshops from a choice of twenty Mr did not feel tills was wlscly organized The big question at this conference was whether counsellors should be doing personalsocial counselling or counselling In counselling such divisions are arbitrary and unrealistic ac cording to Mr Skerrelt He said It is not a matter of personal versus vocational counselling it Is a mutter of start of school If you wondering why there are so many visitors to Acton the reason is basically the same in each ease they want to see the semester system In operation the reaction to it both by
