OUR READERS WRITE Stuart Willard Attacks education costs PO Box Sir Most urban districts have recently experienced a tax hike for which education Is responsible I would question the following facts on the education program 1 why Is it necessary to build schools with no windows which automatically raises hydro costs Do we need the luxurious content of new schools that have been end ere being built I never did understand why the fire marshals office Insists on highpriced celling tile In a brick building when a cheaper one would serve the same purpose Lack of planning when designed where no consideration Is given to the time factor between classes The existence of so many free periods for students Surely school hours of work should be run on the same basis industry and used to fullest extent for these students will not get this In business or Industry Surely a full days work with no free periods would give these people less homework Why arc teachers conventions considered necessary during school hours surely if there Is a necessity for these they should be held out of school hours I would question the use of luxurious equipment in school cafeterias for the preparation of relatively simple meals 7 The long school holidays during the school year taking for example summer holidays when schools are closed for two months or more Also Is It necessary to have so many recesses during the years term Surely the maximum use should be made of these high cost services and this would result In more students being schooled Surely costs would be reduced If only some of the above suggestions were used Last a word on the present salary dispute In County Do these teachers not realize that every dollar raise given can result in higher taxes for the masses There is limit to which the taxpayer con be bled and this should be realized by Ihem for every concession made reflects on the pocket As most of the staff live in the area do they not realize that they are more or less cutting off their nose to spite their face by making excessive demands The present offer Is surely reasonable and on a par with most bodies that have seen the red light and settled The attempt to baffle the public with masses of figures by the negotiators on the staff doesnt make sense for 1 have worked It all out and find that they are wrong Do they realize too that the average worker today sometimes has to reach pensionable age before they even first grade offered to the teaching profession These are the self same people who have to foot the tax bill Do they not realize that this country is In one of the most critical f innncial difficulties that It has ever experienced Wage control will have to come along with price control there Is no doubt It is time that all of society realized this before the country goes bankrupt Lets all put our shoulders to the wheel and get the country on Its feet before oil is lost for the sake of a few lousy bucks I am a trade union member and secretary of group of trade unions and even I can see the red light Why cant these men of the educational field do the same Be with reasonable offer my friends for half a loaf is better than nothing at all Yours truly Andrew Welch Of wood water Dear Sir I have a ward or two to say on this welfare business In our township ihey hnve decided the boys must work for their In my lot the boys were set to work to cut down a very large dead elm tree and a smaller one They were well supervised The afternoon was hot but there was no cool drink standing by for lads who were not accustomed to hard work At least one of the boys had a face so red It was almost blue Sweat was pouring into his eyes and gentlemen that Is not right was advised this wood and there will be a lot of It was to be given Ills my wood so I think I should have a choice in naming the recipient would be glad to give it to some parents who small children and are In need of it 1 know what It Is to be In need of a
