Aclon Press Wednesday May 5 and from world of sport By Denis Gibbons In an effort to attract some of the borderline hockey fans to the arena for their weekend O H A Intermediate championship series with Durham Huskies Included on their advertising posters a reminder games could now be watched in comfort since overhead heaters had recently been installed in the arena So what happens Fans entering the arena for Saturday night game were politely told there would be no heat Difficulty holding ice with the warm May temperatures forced the arena management to forego turning onthcheatcrs Heat or no heat there was scarcely an empty scat in the Durham ice palace for Saturday nights game which tho Huskies won After some first period rowdyism referee Frank Slota ruled with an iron hand going as far as to help separate potential combatants himself Napinee won Saturday game 64 to grab a lead in games in the title series Milton Pete McDuffc was recently named first nil star in the Central Professional Hockey League fine nctmindfng helped Omaha Knights to a first place finish and the playoff championship was particularly brilliant in the playoffs Pete s older brothers Brian and Bruce played intermediate hockey for Acton Tanners this season Righthander Bemie a veteran of over seasons in the Halton County Baseball League with Georgetown Giants and Acton Merchants has signed for the 1971 season with Oak ville Oaks was playing coach of the Giants last summer The team folded at the end of the season because of lack of player interest Lack of funds has forced Acton Rovers senior soccer club to suspend operations for this season Most of the Acton players have been working out with Georgetown Royals while others plan to join teams In Guelph hockey players Don t forget your Sunday May is the of opening day so we hope the weather will cooperate and be a little warmer track surface Is very good after a long cold winter and some of the boys were really moving It looks like I would like to clarify some misconceptions voiced by An Interested Hockey Mother in Inst week paper regarding rules by which the House League Is run enrolling in the hockey program in Acton arc not required to state their intentions as to whether they will play for a team or a House League team A joint registration program is currently used to encourage boys to try out to play hockey but this is not mandatory If a boy commits himself to a team and signs an O M A player card he Is not eligible for House League play until he has a signed release from the head coach of TriCounty Some boys able to play hockey prefer to play House League hockey either of their own choice or that of their parents Playing on the same team as their friends combining academic endeavour and hockey involvement and respecting parental views about travel and late hours are some of the considerations to be made The statement made In last week letter that any boy trying to qualify for the more competitive TriCounty team and returning to the House League must play in the next higher category is false This ruling was attempted for one year but discarded as unsatisfactory as it only resulted in several players all hockey activities for that year House League is only interested in Rockwood aim for more titles Seniors hold their first outdoor workout of th Mel ir I who season tonight Wednesday to thru const Park the first round of this year playoffs Minor ball practices Minor baseball practice for boys in all age groups will be held at Prospect this Saturday morning and every Saturday morning between nine and who wish to register should attend along with parents and others interested in minor lacrosse Films on the game will be shown balanced teamsand fair competition Team rosters art constantly revised at the start of tht season an attempt to a boy to play In the next higher category older more physically mature players could result In his being injured Your executive does not want this responsibility Is a rule that a boy may be moved up if it is highly obvious that this promotion Ls warranted but this action is never taken without the knowledge of the parents There arc more cases In which a boy Is playing in lower category than his actual age would demand so that he feels he Is a contributing member of the team Die and banquet referred to in the letter involve only of a total expenditure of for the 197071 season Since registrations accounted for only of this amount one can see that the committee has been Involved In fund raising as well as practice games and the many other details of running a hockey league We need and welcome help and suggestions from any interested people In all phases of our program I would be remiss If I did not point out that our entire program Is able to operate with a modest outlay because of the cooperative assessment for fee time of 50 per hour by the Recreation Committee This obvious underassessment underwritten by all the taxpayers of Acton On behalf of our committee I wish to thank you for the press coverage of our activities in the past season Yours sincerely ad Chairman Acton Legion Minor Hockey Committee BOWL for Pleasure Junior draft set May 19
