Smoke Rings Blast Orillia Newmarket's flying Smoke Rings knocked off Orillia Bulldozers 5-0 at the arena, Jan. 7 in the weekly junior C tidbit. There was a big lesson to be learned from this encounter. It isn't always the club with the most shots on goal that carries the day. The Smokies were out-blasted 37-24 by the Bulldozers. That means in a nutshell Hub netminder Jim Armstrong was doing a Mr. Zero in the local twinery. Armstrong did just that, making eight big savers to keep his shutout halo shimmering. Coach Norm Legge and Herbie Cain had help from Emms' Barrie bailiwick to give extra bounce to the Smoke Ring rearguard in the person of Marvin "Marvellous" Rutledge. In fact three Smokie rearguards were key figures in bringing home the bacon. They were shot senders on three of the five shots that found a pocket in the Orillia cage. Alvin Smith got the first goal credited to the Smoke Ring back-wallers. It came in the second period after Corby Adams hit for a Newmarket goal at the four-minute mark of the first period. Wayne Croutch slipped the disc onto Adams' stick. Smith's goal scoring shot was fired from the Orillia blue-line and never left the ice. Wayne Maxner and Mo Clifford shuffled to biscuit onto Smith's stick. Bill Hills wound up in his own zone, stick-handled around the Orillia defease at 13.20 of the second period to make it 3-0. Wayne Maxner gathering momentum after an indifferent early season start, broke from centre ice to grab Clifford's pass to fire a tricky riser into the Orillia goal after 16 seconds of third period play. Marvin Rutledge got away a shot from the point during a Smoke Ring ganging attack at 6.45 to hit the corner for the fifth and final Newmarket goal. Luck Rink Wins Miami Accolade Jack Luck's Miami green lawn bowlers are first trebles series champions at the north end winter indoor lawn bowling establishment. The Luck trio, to claim the title, had to defeat Lou Swinghammer and his intrepid band of shotmakers in a sudden-death playoff match, Jan. 7, at the Miami greens. The contest was never in doubt after Luck and company threw three point first end and then stockpiled five in the third end. Swinghammer's company finished strong to collect four points in the final end but by that time Luck and his helpmates were home free. Jack Luck had Jim Kerr and Charles Willis as hjs helpmates. Lou Swinghammer went with Bill Haskett and Lyman Rose, the latter subbing for absentee Ted Andrews. Next on agenda at Miami will be the club championship doubles competition. SPEED-ACTIVITIES AT OUTDOOR RINKS One of the busiest spots in town since mid-December has been the outdorr skating rink in Haskett Park. Several thousand town citizens young and old have been skating and playing, hockey on the rink since ice became available there. The rink was particularly busy over the past weekend. The Parks Board has been endeavoring to establish a pleasure skating rink to the north of the present boarded-in ice cushion. It is hoped in this way there will be ample skating area for both hockey players and pleasure skaters. A vote of thanks is due Bert Hotchkin, George Hunter, Hugh Grant, Doug McVeigh, Bill Metcalfe, Ernie Crossland for their efforts in flooding and keeping the ice clean. Both Messrs Metcalfe and Crossland have donated their tractors to clean snow from the rink. As yet the east side outdoor rink on Queen St. has not been brought into operation. As soon as work on a water connection is completed flooding operations can start. The 1959 council in one of its final acts approved a request to have the Hydro Commission install a light on the east side rink. Aurora Post Twin Triumph Aurora Pears as of Jan. 7 had the best record of any team anywhere in 1960. They've played three in '60 and won three. They shot for two wins last week to hop into a sixth-place tie. with Unionville Jets. Getting a lift from Pat Dineen's sharp goal-keeping, Dough Alcorn's charges upset Woodbridge 4-3 in a humdinger session at Aurora, Jan. 5. Robust John Hall, showing a lot of old-time zip, made most of the heartening news for the Bears by scoring the tying and winning goals. Gordie Sampson, the slower-upper on many Woodbridge goal-ward thrusts, along with Dave MacInnis slammed in the other Aurora goals. The Bears made it four in a row, Jan. 6, by defeating Dixie Beehives 8-3 at Dixie arena. John Hall put a lot of mileage under his skating boots to score three goals to add three assists. Hall's line-mate, Gary Duvi, breezed in to score three, goals as Avell. Gordie Sampson and Leon DeCaire caused the other excitment in the Bears' camp via a goal each. Readers Write Dear Editor: Re your front page. What a pity the new mayor was led by the town clerk to his accidental death --- so untimely. And it took the jury 20 minutes to decide not to give any recommendations or chair of office. Really, sir, it's about time you read your paper after writing it. Let's have a better showing in 1960. Yours truly Cyril A. Howarth Editor's Note - We apologize.
